Listen Up, Whippersnappers. Don't Panic

On Sunday I turn 42. I am the answer to the Life, the Universe, and Everything. I highly doubt this makes me the oldest person at Forces of Geek, but I'm up there, I'm sure. I purposely avoiding doing that whole self-introduction thing because I figured if you were really interested, you could always just Google me. God help us all.

And while I'm not usually prone to publicized introspection (I am lying), I started to write out a big list of geek creds extending back to the 70s. Then, looking it over, I hit the ole delete key. I very much doubt you're interested in how long I've been online (over 20 years) or that I once owned a slide rule or that I still have my original 1st edition AD&D rulebooks. Or any other number of things--some of which surprised myself as I hadn't really thought about my geek past lately. Suffice to say that I was there when, and I'm here now. While I wish the geek community was as strong when I was a kid as it is now, I survived it and am here to see geekdom as force to be reckoned with. Good for us.

I really get a kick out of how strong the culture is now. I love seeing how many high school, junior high school aged kids there are openly expressing their love for things like comics, anime, movies, books, and games. Sure, they may still have to deal with Jock Crotchitch in the high school halls, but they see enough of us oldsters around now to know that none of that shit matters anymore. Jock Crotchitch is gonna be pumping their gas one day. Meanwhile, do your cosplay (we called is masquerade). Pwn lamers online (we played games by mail). Argue over which is better, dubs or subs (we argued about that too). Keep the faith and steady as she goes.

It only gets better.

Cheers!

p.s. I remember the original Gwen Stacy clone. And saw 1982 PBS broadcasts of the Hitchhikers series.
