Hey everyone! Welcome to "It's Geek to Me". My column is all about geek culture. And that's about as specific as it will get, since I'm a geek in too many areas to count. It started with fantasy novels and playing Dungeons & Dragons. It quickly progressed to video games, comic books and shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (I'm a huge Joss Whedon fan and quote him far more than most would consider healthy.) My geek universe has expanded considerably in the past few years, so expect posts on everything: video games, movies, television, comic books and fantasy novels. And since I'm a bit of a heavy metal chick, you may even see a little of that.
I've been writing on geek culture for a while now. (My third career after being an actor and a makeup artist.) First for UGO where I interviewed celebrities, posted a blog, reviewed movies and video games and generally indulged my inner nerd. Now I contribute to IGN, SCI FI Wire, JoBlo, Rotten Tomatoes and Huffington Post. I'm a New York transplant living in Los Angeles, I have a dog, two cats and a snake and my favorite color is black...enough intro. I'm really here today to beg you to watch Dollhouse.
The other night the Sci Fi channel was playing Serenity and I couldn't help but watch it again. Sure, I could have gotten up and grabbed my HD DVD copy to avoid the commercials but I was far too lazy. (Don't laugh. Early technology adopters get screwed.) It reaffirmed my love for Joss Whedon and made me mourn Firefly all over again. (Unfortunately, I lent my copy to a friend and I still haven't gotten it back. That's like not returning someone's favorite teddy bear for a geek. Just saying.) It also got me thinking about poor Joss and his troubled new series Dollhouse. In case you haven't heard about it, Dollhouse stars Buffy alum Eliza Dushku as Echo, one of a group of mind-wiped secret agents who have new personalities implanted in their brains for each mission. A while back, I wrote a piece for SCI FI Wire on why Dollhouse is doomed. Along with many of you, I've been desperate to watch anything from the King of the Geeks but I've also been terrified that it's going to fail. Friday Night Death Slot, cast changes, lackluster trailer, pilot rearrangement...I can't be the only one who's worried. I don't hold out much hope and I can't understand why Joss would go back to FOX after the whole Firefly fiasco. But no matter what I've said, I know Joss can do it if we just give him a little time and support. He's given us Buffy, Angel, Firefly, and the amazing Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Seriously, Neil Patrick Harris as an evil scientist and Nathan Fillion as...well, it really doesn't matter how you cast him as long as I get to look at him. There really isn't much left to watch that appeals to those of us in the geek world and it's about to get worse. Battlestar Galactica is almost over. Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles isn't exactly drawing mass audiences. Lost, if you are one of the five people who can still follow it, is nearing it's conclusion. Stargate, Stargate Atlantis, Sanctuary...all gone, going or hanging by a thread. We've got to do something. We need Joss!
So here is my plea to my fellow geeks: Please watch Dollhouse. Please. Let's all give it a shot. Especially if you're lucky enough to be a Neilson family. There is no way to know what the show is capable of if the ratings aren't good. And boys, it has Eliza Dushku and Amy Acker. You know you want to watch it just for that. Dollhouse premieres February 13th on FOX. And yes, I know that's Friday the 13th. I'm trying to forget about that. Let's all pray to the dear and fluffy lord of our choice that it makes it past the first season.
By the way, if you got that last reference, you're on the right site.
