JAWS WEEK -- So long, and thanks for all the (giant killer) fish!

Jaws had a big effect on me as a kid, some of which lingers to this day. I have a short but vivid memory of watching the opening credits for JAWS 3-D in the theater as a kid. I was only 6 years old, so the giant shark flick would have been one of my earliest movie-going experiences. And the movie-tie-in toy (pictured) was one of my bathtime favorites for years after -- you know, when I was finally brave enough to get back into the water. To this day, I still won't go past the shallows at the beach!

The biggest effect that freaky fish had on me, though, plays on both my lingering fear of the deep and my long-time love of the movies. Shark Week is probably somewhere between "sound" and "color" on the list of things that make TV awesome, but real sharks don't have mutated super-brains or hunt in packs. Thank you, Jaws, for making my favorite movie sharks (and my biggest cinematic guilty pleasure) possible:

DEEP BLUE SEA

Aside from the genetically augmented pack of super sharks and the brilliant Jaws-meets-Poseidon Adventure premise, the film stars geek-friendly action hero Thomas Jane and Nick Mutha-F@*$in Fury himself, Samuel L. Jackson. I can't not watch this movie when it is on. I own it on DVD, and I've still managed to sit through the TV edit, just because I couldn't turn away and spent the commercial breaks reflecting on it's awesomeness. I love this movie and you should too!

SAM JACKSON'S BIG SPOILERY MOMENT:

As an added bonus, here's the trailer to what may very well become my NEXT shark-related guilty pleasure. It might not have the cast and budget of DBS (or Jaws, natch), but what it lacks in quality, it seems to make up for in quantity. I give you Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus:

That photo of the JAWS game just gave me a major flashback to my childhood. Thanks for the post. I gotta say, MEGASHARK vs GIANT OCTOPUS was a disappointment though. It's no SHARK ATTACK 3.

Awesime article. I guess I can come out of the closet now and admit that I enjoyed Deep Blue Sea, that's not to say I think it was good...but seriously, bring on the sharks!

OMG! I totally had that shark game, but I completely forgot about it!

Thank you!
