Columnist, True Hollywood Story
Found online at:
Tell me about your column and your latest projects.
My column: A chronicle of my true life experiences as an actress living in Los Angeles and finding out what it means to chase your dreams all the way to the end of America.
Latest projects: Just finished an episode of Without A Trace and a reading of Larry Gelbart’s newest series for the WGA, in the process of creating my own webisode series, auditioning.
Who or what are the biggest influences on your work and If you could pick one person to collaborate with living or dead, who would you pick?
My biggest influences have been Jutta Von Opperman (this German actress that was my neighbor growing up) and her husband (a director) Ardi. My siblings and I called them PuttaFarti behind their backs as a joke, but they were the first people I ever met who were professional artists. They also smoked long brown cigarettes and had an orange couch and fled the holocaust by motorcycle. So a mix of them, my mom’s side of the family, Joni Mitchell, Michael Jackson, MacGyver, the states of Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and, most recently, California.
I would love to collaborate with the academic community to create art rooted in nonfiction.
What album had the most influence on your adolescence?
Madonna The Immaculate Collection . It was a cassette tape.
What were your favorite toys or games from your childhood?
Cabbage Patch Kids, Snoopy Snow Cone Machine, Candy Land, Sorry, Uno, Pound Puppies, Operation, Light Brite, Barbie (not Jem- her Amazon rip off) and one that was unique to my family when we lived in the mountains for a year and a half in the middle of nowhere: Run from the Goat.
What is your pop culture guilty pleasure?
I will always stop to listen or watch if Tiffany is in something. This has led me in these last years to many a gay pride parade and a few weight loss TV specials.
If you could own one piece of artwork by any artist, who would you choose and why?
Um.... I don’t know, a Monet? Mainly so I could sell it and never have to work again and just make my own art and not have to sell out. And maybe then that art would be worth something someday and some other geek could own it and do the same thing. Wait, is that considered selling out still??
What are your favorite television shows that you feel ended too soon?
Doogie Howser for sure ended too soon. I wanted to see the sixteen year old doctor become the 40 year old doctor telling “when I was your age” stories and lamenting our current health care system. NPH is a friend of mine and I continually beg him to do a guest spot as Doogie on Grey’s Anatomy. “They were both ABC shows. There must be a way!!”, I scream. Also, Arrested Development.
Who is your favorite super hero?
Favorite: Preacher ; Least Favorite: The Octo-mom
If you were to have dinner with 5 people living or dead, who are they and what would you serve?
Einstein, Darwin, Churchill, Joan of Arc and John Lennon. Since they are all dead I don’t think they would need food. I would order take out for myself so I could really concentrate on what we would be taking about. Maybe like lasagna or something.
What fictional character do you identify most with?
Cookie Monster
What 5 movies could you watch again and again?
Sixteen Candles (“I can’t believe this. They fucking forgot my birthday”), Sense and Sensibility (Ang Lee’s direction in this movie is stunning; every frame looks like a beautiful painting), You Can Count On Me (I love it), Star Wars Return of the Jedi (Ewoks are cozy) and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (the original, of course).
What book or author do you regularly recommend?
I read a lot and have a real tendency towards hyperbole, so on any given day I am reading the “best thing I have ever read!!!!” For the last few years that has mainly been non fiction science related stuff (“Have you read about memes??! OMFG I have sooo many!!”)
What are your favorite web sites?
Well, as any of my facebook friends know (I am one of those annoying people that post links a lot): TED, EDGE, The Huffington Post and ybf.com
What are you most looking forward to geeking out over in the coming year?
The creation of my first web series called Beach House that I am creating, writing, producing and starring in. I will probably also be doing craft services. I do not believe in starving artist cliches.
