GEEK SCREENING ROOM presents THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL

Happy Life Day Thanksgiving! Welcome to the latest regular feature here on FOG!, the Geek Screening Room which will showcase rare films, television pilots and more several times a week here on the site!

Today's screening is the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special which aired just once on Friday, November 17, 1978 and which was instantly deemed a critical and fan failure.

The special, which reunited much of the movie cast and introduced bounty hunter Boba Fett and Chewbacca's family, was littered with comedy bits and musical performances from Jefferson Starship and Diahann Carroll.

George Lucas was not a fan of the event, telling a fan that, "If I had the time and a sledgehammer, I would track down every copy of that show and smash it."

Sorry, George. It's just too weird not to share.

Story by George Lucas
Written by Pat Proft, Leonard Ripps, Bruce Vilanch, Rod Warren, Mitzie Welch
Directed by Steve Binder and David Acomba (uncredited)
Starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Art Carney, Harvey Korman, Beatrice Arthur, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels
Musical performances by Jefferson Starship and Diahann Carroll

I think I have a copy of this in a drawer somewhere and have never watched it. What was the story behind this? Why was it made?

I'll be honest...I heard so many negative reactions towards it; I really didn't think it was all that bad. I mean...it wasn't good, but considering Star Wars fans are always saying it's so bad, I expected a thousand times worse. If you can't tell, I'm not a Star Wars fan....
