Bad Robot to Produce Mechanical Marvel
J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot production company has acquired the rights to Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett's storybook/graphic novel Boilerplate: History's Mechanical Marvel.
The book tells the story of "the world's first robot," who is unveiled at the Chicago Columbian Exposition in 1893 and then - in a very Young Indiana Jones Chronicles way - goes on to have adventures throughout the late 19th and early 20th Centuries with the likes of Teddy Roosevelt, Pancho Villa and Lawrence of Arabia. The narrative is told using recreations of artwork and period photographs that feature the robot interacting with characters both real and imagined.
Evidently, Guinan had come up with the concept ten years ago in an attempt to sell it as a comics series, and created a website to help him market the idea which then caught on to the point where it was believed to be true. Boilerplate was finally published in 2009 and was considered one of the best books of the year by Amazon.
This movie news -- which The Hollywood Reporter is claiming as an exclusive -- coming so hot on the heels of Comic-Con should come as no surprise to any SDCC attendees who found out the hard way that Boilerplate was a "buzz book" of the show, and tried to grab a copy there -- only to find out that Guinan and Bennett had sold out by Saturday morning and the creators had already started to accumulate a fairly extensive wait list for shipping copies.
A trailer (for the book, not the film) highlighting Guinan's artwork is available on the creator's website, or you can check it out below:
