After last week’s announcement regarding the restructuring of DC Entertainment, parent company Warner Bros. wasted no time officially announcing the revamp of one of their most iconic properties by signing director Zack Snyder to direct Superman.
The film, which will be produced by Christopher Nolan for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures is the lynchpin for the upcoming slate of films based on the DC Comics characters and is a top priority to get into production to avoid losing the rights to the character to the heirs of original creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster (litigation is pending).
Joining Snyder and Nolan as part of the production are Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder as producers and David S. Goyer as screenwriter.
Details at this point are scarce, but here’s what we know via Snyder’s various interviews:
Via Entertainment Weekly:
“I’ve followed Superman over the years. I wouldn’t say I was a huge devotee, but I’ve kept an eye on the character in the pop culture, and as the pop culture has regarded him, for the past 10 years, especially. I think there’s a real opportunity here. He’s in the perfect place to do something.”
“Think of where Batman was when Chris took that on earlier in the decade. I think Superman is in a very similar place, in terms of being available and in terms of his relationship to where the culture was at that time. Superman is right there. He’s ready. And can I be any more cryptic?”
“All I can is that this is super-awesome, and I’m super-excited, by every aspect of this. He’s Superman. He’s the king of the superheroes.”

“It’s early yet, but I can tell you that what David and Chris have done with the story so far definitely has given me a great insight into a way to make him feel modern. I’ve always felt he was kind of awesome. I’ll finish Sucker Punch and get right at it.”
The film’s villain will be General Zod (who previously appeared in Richard Donner’s Superman II).
“The character deserves to be loved. It’s his time.”

“Chris and David have given this the shape with a great story. It is a hard character to crack.”
“I think he is viable, yes. He endures. We all want to know, ‘How will he come to us now?’ He is the biggest and the baddest of them all. The greatest of them all, right? We all want to know how the next chapter takes shape. I want to know how it will take shape.”
Via MTV Splashpage:
“I had a meeting with Chris and Emma, [and] it was really just talking about, in really sort of civilized and fun terms, who he was to us and what he could be, and I think that those conversations felt free from the pressure of audition and felt more just talking about a character that we both liked. At that point, I was content [whether] I was the one picked or not that I had had a great visit, from a creative and fan point of view, [and] I was satisfied that that was cool.”
“Chris and David — have created an amazing story and the “Why Superman?” question is definitely being looked at with care. That’s all I could hope for as a director — that those guys have already gone a long way to making him, [addressing] the “Why?” of Superman, [and] toward understanding him. … Everyone always says “Why Superman?” Why is he relevant? Who is he now? I think those guys have done an amazing job with that. That’s the real trick.”
Snyder also stated that Brandon Routh will not reprise the role and casting has not yet begun.
