Critics are a little torn between admitting that Super 8 is a pretty good pop-corn summer movie and chastising it for going more than a tad overboard with what’s being referred to as the “Spielberg-porn.”
While I didn’t hate the film, I was less nostalgic and more distracted by the number of Spielbergian tropes that structure, pepper and dominate the movie.

Glynn Turman, the science teacher/victim from Gremlins plays yet another science teacher/victim named Dr. Woodward.
Blue toned lighting and lens flares used to foreshadow and enhance the mood.
Assortment of young teen adventuring boys, CHECK. One of them is the “fat kid,” CHECK.
Not disclosing the full features and scale of the creature until the very end.
Older sibling helps out when in need of a car to get an alien back to its home planet.
Alien just using the townsfolk as food in the meantime.
Chaotic town hall meeting leads to one person who can help the Sheriff with his dilemma.
A car, a bus or a trailer is the last place you wanna be when a giant monster attacks.
