First, Hollywood announced it would bring us DIE HARD… in space! Now, we’re getting HEART OF DARKNESS… in space!
The future is now!
Variety reports that Radar Pictures has hired Peter Cornwell (THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT) to direct an adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s novel HEART OF DARKNESS as a "spacebound sci-fi pic.” The film will be called INTO DARKNESS which is actually a pretty good title as it applies to space exploration while calling to mind the themes of the novel.
Conrad’s novel chronicles a ferryboat captain’s quest to find the ivory trader Kurtz and return him back to civilization after he disappears into the wilderness of the Congo.
Unsure if this story can survive the transition to a new setting and time period? Well, when Francis Ford Coppola is at the helm it works just fine as can be quickly proven by a viewing of APOCALYPSE NOW. In that film the setting was changed to Cambodia during the Vietnam War.
I must just be a sucker for anything… in space! As with the “DIE HARD in space” pitch before it, I’m totally loving the sound of this one.
