THE PULL LIST – AVENGERS VS. X-MEN #1, O.M.A.C. #8, FATALE #4 & MORE!

Check out what I checked out this week.

Whether the comics are inspiring or disappointing, I read them all.

Welcome to The Pull List.

And, as always…Spoilers ahead!

Avengers Vs. X-Men #1 (Pick of the Week)
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Art: John Romita & Scott Hanna
Colors: Laura Martin
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99

The fantasy matchup that fanboys have been dreaming about has arrived.

The Phoenix Force is heading to Earth and Captain America isn’t taking any chances. He wants Hope in custody but Cyclops ain’t havin’ it.

Bendis’ superb writing conveyed that big fight feel that you want from an event. The tension slowly builds through the book starting with the inside cover where the deck is already stacked against the X-Men with their six members compared to the Avengers twenty two.

The tension reaches its boiling point when Cap says “You do understand, I wasn’t asking.” causing Cyclops to the throw the first punch.

Wolverine being conflicted as to which side he is going to be on was portrayed well and poses a lot of questions. He is a member of both teams and while he has an immense amount of respect for Cap, his heart will always be with the X-Men.

Wolverine’s educational ideology makes you wonder if the students and faculty of the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning get involved as Utopia serves as ground zero. John Romita Jr.’s art failed to capture the gravity of the situation involving these two super groups. It’s not bad work at all but it’s kind of a let down when you compare it to the pages of “Civil War” and “House of M”.

Overall, this a highly entertaining book that everyone should get their hands on.

Incorruptible #28
Writer: Mark Waid
Art: Damian Couceiro
Colors: Nolan Woodard
Publisher: Boom! Studios
Price: $3.99

The truth is a funny thing sometimes.

We try to be honest as much as possible but we have all been caught in a situation or two where we honestly felt that lying was the better course of action. Whether we were right or not is another matter.

Coalville is reeling in the wake of Lieutenant Armadale’s death and St.Lucifer is using this to his advantage. Max Damage has refused to step in when it comes to St.Lucifer, but things change. Max believes the truth, above all else, is paramount while St.Lucifer believes the truth is just a word.

Mark Waid’s writing shines in situations like this because he makes you think as he presents a dilemma where the bad guy may be right. The art was a bit off in the facial expression department: some smiles were really cries and some laughter really meant pain.

Entertaining book all around with that classic comic book ending that makes you want to see what happens next.

Grade: B

The Amazing Spider-Man #683
Writer: Dan Slott
Art: Stefano Caselli
Colors: Frank Martin
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99

The world’s leaders are crumbling under the fear of Doc Ock’s weapon. Spidey will not stand for this and he even pimp slaps a prominent member of the Democratic Party to get his point across.

Dan Slott is so good at writing Spider-Man that sometimes it seems like he is simply showing off. He has this uncanny ability to make every issue as fresh as the last, even if it’s part of an existing story arc.

While I missed Humberto Ramos’ artwork, which will be back next month, Caselli does an excellent job depicting the significance of what the world faces.

Oh yeah, The Avengers vs. Sinister Six is pretty cool too!

Grade: A-

O.M.A.C. #8
Writer: Dan Didio
Art: Keith Giffen
Colors: Hi-Fi
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99

O.M.A.C.’s will be a missed addition to the New 52 as its swan song provides a bitter sweet ending with numerous possibilities.

Obviously the series was canceled due to less then stellar sales. For the few hardcore fans who love and adore this series, we’re all buying this comic for the same reason. It is amazing!

Collectors will not want to miss this issue and those never read the series will enjoy it because of Giffen’s Kirby-esque art and Dan Didio’s use of the inner monologue through caption boxes to introduce readers to Kevin Kho, the man inside the monster.

Have we really seen the last O.M.A.C.?

I doubt it.

Grade: B+

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #9
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Art: David Marquez
Colors: Justin Ponsor
Publisher:Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99

Overall, this is an outstanding book from start to finish.

Bendis’ slow pacing is just what the doctor ordered. While Sara Pichelli’s artwork is the gold standard on all things Miles Morales, David Marquez did a great job with all of the lighthearted moments that separate this book from every other book on the market.

Uncle Aaron and Scorpion butt heads and that provides the action in the book with some nice visuals to boot.

NYPD Captain Frank Quaid makes a cameo and Miles and Ganke’s cover-up routine never gets old and is sure to bring a smile to your face.

Grade: B

Daredevil # 10.1
Writer: Mark Waid
Art: Khoi Pham
Colors: Javier Rodriquez
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $2.99

We are treated to yet another jumping on point with the point one issue.

The best part of this issue is seeing the senses of Matt Murdock being put to the test while meeting an incarcerated client.

The artwork left a lot to be desired but the color treatment of Javier Rodriquez steals the show, visually.

The creative efforts of Mark Waid’s script treats readers to an enjoyable issue.

Not hard to understand why Mark Waid received two Eisner award nominations for his work on this series.

Grade: B-

Fatale #4
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Art: Sean Phillips
Colors: Dave Stewart
Publisher: Image Comics
Price: $3.50

In my opinion, Fatale is the best independent comic going today.

Brubaker’s flawless storytelling and Sean Phillips’ art beautifully complimented by Dave Stewart’s coloring is brilliant.

The pieces of the puzzle start to come together in a manner that produces more questions than answers. I don’t want to give away a single thing in this review.

Trust me when I say buy this comic book right now and buy the previous issues if you haven’t read it yet.

Each issue hooks you more and more as the evil things that lurk in the shadows will consume your imagination.

Grade: A-

Fanboys vs. Zombies #1 (Disappointment of the Week)
Writer: Sam Humphries
Art: Jerry Gaylord & Penelope Gaylord
Colors: Nolan Woodard
Publisher: Boom! Studios
Price: $1.00

Even at the cost of 100 pennies, I would put your money to better use.

The story of five over the top geeks at San Diego Comic-Con presents a sloppy script with poor execution.

The cartoony art work was nice but the over-all product was too annoying for the reader to have any interest and the reason for the zombie appearance is lame.
