Cine-Geek Nuggets: CONTAGTION 2, THE QUEEN, PADDINGTON BEAR & More!

Contagion is getting a sequel; this time the virus is man-made.  Scott Z. Burns who wrote the first film is producing.

Cameron Diaz and Benicio Del Toro are teaming up for the action comedy, Agent: Century 21.  Diaz plays “a woman who works in real estate and is dejected from her recent divorce. Feeling that she can’t catch a break, she agrees to take on an unpleasant task for her boss which leads to her getting kidnapped and tossed into the center of a Mexican drug war.  Del Toro will play the Cartel boss who takes pity on her and gives her a chance to save her life by sending her on an impossible mission to avenge the death of his son.”

David Wain will direct Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler in the romantic-comedy parody, They Came Together.  “When Joel (Rudd) and Molly (Poehler) meet, it’s hate at first sight; his big corporation is the one that threatens to shut down her quirky knick-knack store. Story, which follows their predictably on-again/off-again relationship, features rom-com staples such as the jealous ex-girlfriend, the office jerk, scary in-laws, a boring dentist, a wise dog and beautiful shots of New York City in autumn.”

Mall, based on Eric Bogosian’s 2001 novel of the same name, will serve as Linkin Park member Joe Hahn’s feature directorial debut.  “Bogosian’s debut novel follows five suburban strangers whose paths cross over the course of one hellish night at a shopping mall, where a drug-addled madman goes on a shooting spree.” The ensemble includes Gina Gershon, Peter Stormare and Vincent D’Onofrio

Stephen Frears is currently the frontrunner to helm The Queen, a biopic based on the life of Freddie MercurySacha Baron Cohen is attached to portray the rocker, who passed away in 1991.  Queen band members Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon have licensed a music-rights package to the production that includes Queen’s biggest hits, including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.”

Liam Neeson will reteam with Unknown director Jaume Collet-Serra on Non-Stop, which takes place on an international flight on which Neeson is forced into stopping a threat.

Dirty Dancing is getting a remake.

Rachel McAdams might star in the latest Richard Curtis (Love Actually) film, About Time, a fantastical feel-good movie about a man with the ability to travel back in time who eventually meets the girl of his dreams. 

Robert De Niro is teaming with Michael Douglas in the Dan Fogelman written / John Turteltaub directed Last Vegas, which centers on a quartet of retired boomers who head to Vegas for a bachelor party by their friend, a ladies man who is finally
settling down and marrying a woman half his age.

Paddington Bear is now in development as a CGI-live action film which will feature a modern take on the classic children’s book about a talking, accident-prone young bear from Darkest Peru who’s
found at Paddington Station and adopted by a London family.

Andre 3000 has been cast as Jimi Hendrix in All Is By My Side, a bio-pic from writer/director John Ridley that apparently won’t feature any of the iconic guitarist’s music.

MGM has acquired From The Dust Returned, a Ray Bradbury collection of short
stories that focuses on a mortal boy named Timothy who is adopted into a
family of benevolent ghouls.

Sony Pictures is developing Shadow Runners for Chris Hemsworth, an action thriller.  Hemsworth will play a former Navy SEAL who tries to recapture his
potential and repair a rift with an old comrade in arms, as he leads a
team of elite international operatives on a mission against a mysterious
enemy.
