Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S7E17: Sleeper

In yet another attempt by the writers of Smallville to somehow convince us that Jimmy Olsen is more than the nerdy photographer punching above his weight class but somehow scoring hot girls like a short, white Wilt Chamberlain, the Government forces him to be a special agent so he can keep tabs on Chloe for them.

Meanwhile, Clark gets a weird message from a still missing Kara and Lex finds out the answer to Brad Pitt’s most asked question: “What’s in the box?”

The Random:
1. Gotta give Jimmy some props at least for giving it his all to be a good boyfriend to Chloe, who’s been filling in for Lana while she’s still in a vegetative—or, as it’s medically referred to, Lana—state after Brainiac’s attack.

2. You know what builds trust in relationships?  Spying on one another and hacking into computers.  I read that one in Cosmo.  Or at least that was the defense I used on my ex.  Either way, the dual tension between Jimmy and Chloe does add a lot of fun to their club scene.

3. You have to love how secret agents in television shows never have a problem with wanton torture of prisoners.  It’s a good thing that never happens in real…uh…I’ve maybe said too much.  There’s someone knocking at my door.

Chloe’s seen some better days, that’s for sure…
The Awesome:
1. It doesn’t happen often, but let’s give Clark some credit for figuring out that if they can’t find Brainiac and Kara on Earth that maybe they left the planet and perhaps a satellite picked something up.  Not even Chloe thought of that one first, smooth move, CK.

2. Sure, it’s reminiscent of Frequency, but Clark having to rely on messages from Kara in the past of Krypton in order to save Lana in the present is pretty cool even with the leap in logic it takes to get there, especially with the revelation that Brainiac’s Back to the Future plan is to kill a baby Kal El before he can leave Krypton.

3. Lex doesn’t get to do a whole lot in this episode, but he makes the most of his time by getting inside the Zurich safe deposit box, beating the crap out of the guy who’s trying to kill him for doing so, and then clearing Chloe’s name for Jimmy, setting him up for some major blackmail in the not too distant future.  That’s just good villainy.

“If I came all this way for an empty box,
I’m gonna be hella pissed…”

The WTF?!:
1. All right, I get that Clark is concerned about Lana, but seriously, he needs to listen to Chloe and focus on getting the keys away from Lex being as how whatever’s in that box can supposedly control him.  How is he not getting this?

2. When the Government came to me about the Secret Service, I guarantee they didn’t do so by revealing a master plan to me with a briefcase full of weaponry to go on an undercover mission, especially since I hadn’t been vetted by the security clearance process.  But this is Smallville, where nothing makes sense.

3. Aside from being insanely trusting with a civilian, what exactly is the competence level of this agency that’s after Chloe?  A team of three, allegedly highly trained operatives get their asses kicked by Jimmy frikkin’ Olsen and then lose track of both him and Chloe?  Honestly?  Did that just happen?

How Jimmy didn’t just get bitchslapped clear across
the room is beyond me.
