Batman Begins explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight’s emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents’ murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne  travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city.

In The Dark Knight, with the help of Lt. Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante.

Concluding the story in The Dark Knight Rises, it has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

When Horror Came To Shochiku: Eclipse From The Criterion Collection

Following years of a certain radioactive beast’s domination of the box office, many Japanese studios tried to replicate the formula with their own brands of monster movies. One of the most fascinating, if short-lived, dives into that fiendish deep end for elegant dramas by the likes of Kenji Mizoguchi and Yasujiro Ozu. In 1967 and 1968, the company created four certifiably batty, low-budget fantasies, tales haunted by watery ghosts, plagued by angry insects, and stalked by aliens – including one in the form of a giant chicken-lizard. Shochiku’s outrageous and oozy horror period shows a studio leaping into the unknown, even if only for one brief, bloody moment.

Films Include

  • The X From Outer Space • You may be put off poultry forever once you take a gander at the destructive extraterrestrial in this bizarre and beloved monster movie.

  • Goke, Body Snatcher From Hell • A plane crash is just the first trauma for a group of people about to be beset by an evil, soul-stealing force.

  • The Living Skeleton • A young woman is haunted by what appears to be the ghost of her dead twin sister – as well as a boatload of other restless ghouls.

  • Genocide • A swarm of ferocious bugs takes down a plane carrying an H-bomb. And they have even bigger plans.

Sunset Boulevard

Intense, enthralling, and unforgettable, Sunset Boulevard stars Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond, a faded silent-movie star, and William Holden as Joe Gillis, a down-on-his-luck screenwriter whom she enlists to help her make her triumphant “return to the screen.” Directed by and co-written by Billy Wilder, this mesmerizing Hollwyood classic won three Academy Awards.

Harold And Maude: The Criterion Collection

With the idiosyncratic American fable Harold and Maude, countercultural director Hal Ashby fashioned what would become the cult classic of its era. Working from a script by Colin Higgins, Ashby tells the story of the emotional and romantic bond between a death-obsessed young man from a wealthy family and a devil-may-care, bohemian octogenarian (Ruth Gordon).

Equal parts gallows humor and romantic innocence, Harold And Maude dissolves the line between darkness and light, along with the ones that separate people by class, gender, and age, and it features indelible performances and a remarkable soundtrack by Cat Stevens.

Battle Royale: The Complete Collection

In 2000, director Kinji Fukasaku unleashed Battle Royale, his violently poetic epic about an innocent group of Junior High students forced by the government to hunt and kill their classmates for sport. It was nominated for 10 Japanese Academy Awards, launched a global phenomenon, and banned from screens by frightened civic groups and distributors across America. Three years later, the equally disturbing sequel – featuring a new class, new rules, and a brutal terrorist plot by the film’s first young survivors – triggered its own tragic firestorm around the world.

Now for the first time ever, you can see it all; experience the entire Battle Royale on 4 discs – including more than 2 hours of definitive Special Features – that forever blasts open one of the most potent, shocking and savagely influential sagas in motion history.

Rosemary’s Baby: The Criterion Collection

Horrifying and darkly comic, Rosemary’s Baby was Roman Polanski’s Hollywood debut. This wildly entertaining nightmare, faithfully adapted from Ira Levin’s best seller, stars a revelatory Mia Farrow as a young mother-to-be who grows increasingly suspicious that her overfriendly elderly neighbors (played by Sidney Blackmer and an Oscar-winning Ruth Gordon) and self-involved husband (John Cassavetes) are hatching a satanic plot against her and her baby. In the decades of occult cinema that Polanski’s ungodly masterpiece has spawned, it has never been outdone for sheer psychological terror.

With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story

With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story explores the vivid life and imagination of Stan Lee, the 89-year-old comic book legend who co-created over 500 legendary pop culture characters including Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, Thor and The Hulk. Featuring interviews with both fans and colleagues including Kevin Smith, Patrick Stewart, Samuel L. Jackson, John Romita, Todd McFarlane, Eva Mendes and more, the film is the tale of one man’s determination to tell incredible stories that have enchanted the world for over 40 years.

Sense of Scale

An oral history of the amazing hand crafted workmanship that has produced many iconic film effects over the last 35 years featuring interviews with model makers from America, England, Germany, and Canada. Directed by Berton Pierce, the film features such legendary talents as Lorne Peterson, Mark Stetson, Gene Rizzardi, Patrick McClung, Greg Jein, and Gene Warre, and focuses on how computer technology is slowly taking away practical hand made craftsmanship.

Little Shop Of Horrors: The Director’s Cut & Theatrical Version

A comedy, a love story and a cult classic starring a giant singing plant from outer space – what else could it be but Little Shop Of Horrors? The 1986 film has a surprisingly complex history; it began as a short story, then became a low-budget film, before turning into an Off-Broadway play, when finally Frank Oz and his team created this quirky, dark screen version. Many fans do not know that this adaptation originally had a far more sinister ending, which everyone can now see in the Director’s Cut of the film included in this special edition package.

Godzilla: The Criterion Collection

Godzilla (a.k.a. Gojira) is the roaring granddaddy of all monster movies. It’s also a remarkably humane and melancholy drama, made in Japan at a time when the country was reeling from nuclear attack and H-bomb testing in the Pacific. Its rampaging radioactive beast, the poignant embodiment of an entire population’s fears, became a beloved international icon of destruction, spawning almost thirty sequels. A thrilling, tactile spectacle that continues to be a cult phenomenon, the original, 1954 Japanese version is presented here, along with Godzilla, King of the Monsters, the 1956 “Americanized” version.

Quadrophenia: The Criterion Collection

The Who’s classic rock opera Quadrophenia was the basis for this invigorating coming-of-age movie and depiction of the depiction of defiant, drug-fueled mod subculture of early 1960s London. Our antihero, Jimmy (Phil Daniels), a teenager dissatisfied with family, work, and love. He spends his time knocking around with his clothes-obsessed, pill-popping, scooter-driving fellow mods, a group whose antipathy for the motorcycle-riding rockers leads to a climactic riot in Brighton. Director Franc Roddam’s rough-edged film is a quintessential chronicle of youthful rebellion and turmoil, with Pete Townshend’s brilliant songs (including “I’ve Had Enough,” “5:15,” and “Love, Reign O’er Me”) providing emotional support, and featuring Sting and Ray Winstone in early roles.

Shallow Grave: Criterion Collection

This diabolical thriller was the first film from director Danny Boyle, producer Andrew Macdonald, and screenwriter John Hodge (the smashing team behind Trainspotting). In Shallow Grave, three self-involved Edinburgh roommates-played by Kerry Fox (An Angel at My Table), Christopher Eccleston (Elizabeth), and Ewan McGregor (Beginners), in his first starring role-take in a brooding boarder. When he dies of an overdose, leaving a suitcase full of money, the trio embark on a series of very bad decisions, with extraordinarily grim consequences for all. Macabre but with a streak of offbeat humor, this stylistically influential tale of guilt and derangement is a full-throttle bit of Hitchcockian nastiness.

Octaman is the sought after 1972 cult classic from director Harry Essex (Creature from the Black Lagoon) and comes to DVD in a newly-remastered from 35mm widescreen edition. Features special effects makeup by future Academy Award Winner Rick Baker (An American Werewolf in London) and stars Kerwin Matthews (The 7th Voyage of Sinbad), Jeff Morrow (This Island Earth), Pier Angeli (Battle of the Bulge); the DVD also features original trailers, video interview, and Retromedia Drive-In wrap-around. The story begins with the critical and box office smash hit film Walking Tall, starring Joe Don Baker as Buford Pusser, the fed-up lawman who fought a tremendous uphill battle to clean up his hometown.

Based on a true story, these three classic films – the first starring Baker (GoldenEye), then featuring Bo Svenson (Inglourious Basterds) for the two sequels – have captured Pusser’s legacy as the man who showed America what Walking Tall is all about.

The Walking Tall Trilogy is a testament to the legendary sheriff who decided it was time for payback… and became one of the most popular movie heroes of all time!

And who better to help us navigate the occult meanings of B-movies’ holiest scriptures than space captives Joel, Mike and their robot companions Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot? Their running commentaries allow us to laugh at inscrutable plots, painful performances and felonious filmmaking. Here, for the funniest study session you’ll ever have, are four more movies unearthed from the ancient caves of Hollywood as interpreted by the long-suffering scholars aboard the Satellite of Love. Titles include Robot Holocaust, Operation Kid Brother, Kitten With A Whip & Revenge Of The Creature.
