Let’s Go To The Movies: CAN’T BUY ME LOVE

Ahhh…teenage prostitution.

Before it used the Beatle‘s song, Can’t Buy Me Love as it’s title, this 1987 film was originally slated to be called Boy Rents Girl.

Director Steve Rash, who previously had directed Gary Busey in his Academy Award nominated performance in The Buddy Holly Story and who later directed a slew of direct to DVD sequels including two Bring It Ons, an American Pie and a Road Trip, helmed the project written by Michael Swerdlick.

The story focused on a nerd who gives his lawn mowing savings to a unrequited crush (who needs the money to replace her mother’s damaged dress), who will, in turn, pretend to be his girlfriend for a month, escalating his popularity amongst the high school.

Starring as the nerd was Patrick Dempsey and his dream girl was played by Amanda Peterson.  The supporting cast included Courtney Gains, Tina Caspary, Seth Green, Eric Bruskotter, Dennis Dugan and Ami Dolenz.

The film certainly had a number of fans, and references have been made in more recent films as Easy A, Drive Me Crazy and Love Don’t Cost a Thing (which also utilized Swerdlick’s screenplay).

And now, go from totally to totally chic after the jump.
