Girls is trying to reveal some sort of depth or insight within the characters and failing at every turn.
A dog walk between bros, a dream-like affair, awkward dinners with parents, and one-night stands with the grossest people: it’s all ridiculous.
The moments where we are supposed to feel for these characters are lost on the contrived scripted set-ups.
We’ve seen the suburban parents, we’ve seen the uptight yuppie parents, and tonight’s episode brought us the hillbilly-hippie parents.
And it was pretty stupid.
It was supposed to show us why Jessa is this flaky, free spirit, but even in her moments of longing and despair, I didn’t sympathize with her.
The message resembled the fear that we are doomed to repeat our parents’ mistakes despite our desire not to. Didn’t work. Message was obvious and unresolved.
Interactions were forced and unemotional. I didn’t buy Jessa’s sadness for a minute because it’s all surface material. We still know Hannah complains about anything and everything and then has sex with someone weird, but other than that these are just chicks wearing silly outfits for the most part.
I’m over it.
