FOG! Chats with the Geeky Hostess (Tara Theoharis) About Baking, Becoming A Food/Life Geek and Kickstarting A Line Of Nerd-Centric Sprinkles

Becoming a Geek Hostess-with-the-Mostess takes time, hard work and a desire to make all things in life Geek-related, and if there is one person on the planet who has all of these qualities it’s The Geeky Hostess herself, Tara Theoharis.

A passionate believer that you should incorporate as much geekiness/dorkiness/nerdiness in your life as possible, Ms. Theoharis has created a one-stop blog that specializes in parties, gift ideas, home decor, recipes, etiquette, fashion, and more to turn your parents basement (or very own home if you are that successful) into an abode dedicated to all your obsessions.

FOG! recently chatted with Ms. Theoharis about her geeky livelihood as well as her Kickstarter campaign to provide the world with Nerd-power sprinkles (which, as we all know, totally makes a cupcake).

Check it out after the break.

FOG!: How did the Geeky Hostess come about? Was it a calling or a general sense that all baked goods should be imbibed with superpowers?

Tara: The Geeky Hostess came about when I realized I wanted to learn more about baking, cooking, decorating, and entertaining, but that I also didn’t want to leave behind my geeky passions. I wanted to find a way for both interests to co-habitate. Starting the blog gave me an excuse to learn more and try out recipes in a public forum.

FOG!: What are some of the things that a Geek Hostess-in-training should know about becoming one herself?

Tara: The only way to become a Geeky Hostess (or Host!) is just to start. Bring some homemade food to your next game night instead of a bag of chips. Add something decorative to your table next time you have a dinner party. Find a setting in a book or show you love and think “How can I adapt these elements into my home decor?”

FOG!: What are some of the surprises you learned once you became the Martha Stewart of Home Geekery?

Tara: I learned that I’m not alone and by far not the best at this! There are so many amazing geeky parties and recipes out there, and everyone’s speciality is a bit different. I love seeing things other people make–we should continue to share our geekdom in fun and delicious ways and inspire others to do the same!

FOG!: You have a Kickstater campaign up that is hoping to raise the funds necessary to create a line of Geek sprinkles (which is certainly an area where the hand of geek hasn’t been fully realized yet,) what made you think of it and, more importantly, what made you decide on the three specific styles (Steampunk, Lightning Bolt and Tardis)?

Tara: I love baking and finding new ways to incorporate geekiness into food. I felt sprinkles would be an easy way for anyone to add a bit of geekiness to their projects in a fun and quick way! I wanted to start with some versatile shapes that wouldn’t alienate those who weren’t as geeky. Lightning Bolts and Steampunk gears can both be used for a variety of projects. The Police Box shape came as a suggestion from fans. It was the most-suggested sprinkle shape!

FOG!: If fully funded, and are successful, what are your future plans for the Sprinkle line? Will you add additional shapes or try and encompass other geek decorating accoutrements?

Tara: If fully funded, I would love to expand the “Geeky Hostess” line to include more sprinkles and baking accessories. It all depends on how well the Kickstarter does!

FOG: What’s on the horizon for the Geeky Hostess?

Tara: More parties, more recipes, and hopefully, a lot more sprinkles!

If you are a fan of adding more geek to your baked goods, check out Tara’s hilarious Kickstarter pitch video below and dammit, give her some money to make these sprinkles a reality. I mean, if I’m going to gorge myself on Gryffindor-colored cupcakes, they better have some lightening bolt sprinkles on top of it (and it doesn’t hurt that she is offering some really great backer rewards as well).
