Now that someone has an iPad, that someone (OK, its me!) is reading comics whenever, wherever and however he can! This Triple Shot takes us to more than one battlefield with Vito Delsante’s World War Mob and also to the Anglo-Zulu War in Guido Vrolix’ The Soldier. Don’t worry, we have aliens and huge axes wielded by a strong female hero in Valhalla Cindermane.

Issue #1 of Vito Delsante’s World War Mob hits the ComiXology store today. A quick review of the book in the platform’s new browser-friendly HTML 5 Beta reminds us what a great story we have here.

For fans of Band of Brothers and Goodfellas, this World War II story brings us from the collection rounds of gangsters on the Lower East Side to the front lines to the Battle of the Ardennes.

Capt. Vinny DiGreco is offered a secret mission while on leave in Sicily.

The circle of life as it where, even the Army owes Lucky Luciano a favor, so Vinny accepts a top secret mission, that will have affects on the outcome of the war!

Vito shared that no one in comics has touched on wiseguys joining the draft before, and we hope the concept catches on. Issue #1 is off to a great start, full of action, Nazi punching and also street level crime stuff happening in New York.

Giancarlo’s art is great as well, he colors himself in watercolor washes. His line work reminiscent of great Sgt. Rock work by Joe Kubert. The realist illustration really helps set the tone and time setting.

World War Mob takes comics back to classic storytelling, combining rather than mashing up genres to give the reader a one of a kind experience. This world can be built on in many different directions, and our hero in the first issue is one we can root for both as patriotic Americans and fans of organized crime stories.

Here’s a great introduction to a new set of superheroes.

For fans of Witchblade but also Superman, two main characters are introduced, our title character Valhalla Cindermane as well as our crash-landed on the planet super scientist, Perilous.

Great action, mobsters, car chases, and an intro to an alien planet followed by police standoffs make for an exciting step into this world where our female lead carries a big axe and ask questions later!

If you are going to risk the one dollar barrier to entry, this book is worth it and we’ll follow along as the next issues come out!

Here’s a more unique setting for a war book, South Africa in 1879. This is the first part of Guido’s series on soldiers, set in different wars over the course of time, the next volumes cover World War I, II, and Vietnam (I’m sure these are coming to ComiXology via Submit, but his site links to the iBook store for the following issues at the moment).

A history lesson here, for Americans, the Zulu Nation fought bravely against the British Empire in 1879. Guido’s color palette is very bright in this book, but the line work is flat and the classic cartooning and storytelling style works to set the tone of a battle whereby only one side has guns.

The proud Zulu soldiers, with their spears and orange shields were no match for the muskets of Her Majesty’s Army.

As with any battle, both sides suffered casualties. The narration tells the story wonderfully.

This is a great book about war providing a battle as a vignette to the larger story, and concentrating on one particular British soldier’s perspective on the scene.

Guido Vrolix is an accomplished Belgian fine artist, playwright and comics artist. While not a household name to the comic market, he has a natural talent for the medium.
