COOL SHIRTS: A Look At T-Shirt Offerings From NerdKungFu.com!

By Stefan Blitz

There’s no doubt that the boldest and most personal fashion statement anyone can make is in one’s selection of t-shirt.  Personally, I love them.  It’s an opportunity to show the world what pop culture I care about, a wonderful flashback to the past and a fantastic way to initiate any nerd discussion.

For this installment of Cool Shirts, I took a look at some of the shirts from Nerd Kung Fu, which might very well have the largest selection of pop culture t-shirts that I’ve ever seen.  If that isn’t enough of a temptation, every order includes free U.S. shipping!  They also carry shirts in sizes small through 7XL and the site is filled with lots of nerdy trivia on the history of t-shirts!

Nerd Kung Fu isn’t satisfied carrying just a huge t-shirt selection.  They are also currently selling a wide array of posters and a number of geek-centric ephemera including coffee mugs, shot glasses, pint glasses, blankets, wallets, buttons, magnets, playing cards, hoodies and much more.

There is something for virtually any nerdcentric provocation.

These are a few of my recent favorites.

Leave it to Beaver “Gee That’s Swell” T-Shirt

Want to show off your geek cred?  Wear this shirt and brag that you’re a fan because Joss Whedon’s dad was a writer for it.  You can even make up the story that Leave it to Beaver was set in Sunnydale and featured the first appearance of a Hellmouth on television.

Or you can grow a pair and admit that Leave It To Beaver is an amazing sitcom, was set in Mayfield, California and that Eddie Haskell actor Ken Osmond did not grow up to be Alice Cooper.

Either way, it’s swell.  And so is this shirt.

Dragnet Pulp T-Shirt

Jack Webb played the straight-as-an-arrow-no-nonsense Sgt. Joe Friday on radio and on at least three different television incarnations of Dragnet.  This retro pulp magazine inspired shirt certainly captures the mood better than the Dan Aykroyd movie incarnation or even the 1967 episode, The LSD Story, which had the series try and attract a younger, hipper audience.

One of the hightlights was Friday confronting a drugged out hippie, “You’re pretty high and far out, aren’t you? What kind of kick are you on, son?”

And with that, Dragnet introduced LSD to middle America.

Superman T-Shirt – Super Hombre El Hombre Del Acero

Mire para arriba en el cielo!  Es un pájaro!  Es un avión! Es un Superhombre!

Señor Mxyzptlk must say his name backwards or hay un gran problema!

King Kong Last Stand T-Shirt

I have a feeling that if Skull Island had a gift shop this might be one it’s more popular sellers.  This beautiful image (off of the film’s one sheet) shows Kong, the “Eighth Wonder of the World” perched atop the Empire State Building with Ann Darrow clutched in one hand as the other crushes a Boeing P-12.

Not only a beautiful looking shirt, but also one that can be appreciated by any cinegeek.

“Throw your arms across your eyes and scream, Ann. Scream for your life!”

Batman T-Shirt – Detective #69 Cover

It’s “The Harlequin’s Hoax” as the Dynamic Duo, Batman and Robin square off against The Clown Prince of Crime, The Joker in this fantastic shirt with art by the late, great Jerry Robinson.  This shirt is a must have for Bat-Fans and truly does a great job depicting these iconic characters in all of their glory.

“Holy 100% Cotton, Batman!”

Star Trek – Alien Squares T-Shirt

There’s something about this Star Trek The Original Series shirt that invokes the legendary game show, The Hollywood Squares. All that’s missing is “The Master of The Hollywood Squares” Peter Marshall introducing the shirt

“With us today, starting clockwise from the top left we’ve got The Gorn, followed by Klingon Commander Kor, an Orion Slave Girl, Commissioner Bele, a Talosian, the M113 creature aka The Salt Vampire, a Romulan Commander, Andorian representative Shras and in the center square….Balok!

Justice League of America Trinity T-Shirt

If you’ve seen images from the upcoming Superman V. Batman: Dawn of Justice, you’ve seen everything that’s wrong with the depiction of these characters; dark, angry, violent.  Fortunately, this awesome shirt has the opposite effect.  Featuring art by one of the masters of the comic book medium, José Luis García-López, this shirt is reminiscent of the beloved classic line of Super Powers! action figures that were based on García-López’s art.

The pantheon of the DC Universe, this shirt shows off the trinity of truth, justice and peace for all mankind!

Mighty Mouse – “Welcome to Planet Cheese” T-Shirt

The star of over 80 animated shorts and one of television’s most enduring icons, Mighty Mouse is virtually forgotten to younger audiences.  A brief reimagined series under the supervision of Ralph Bashki, Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures, became controversial when the crimefighter crushed and inhaled flower petals which apparently was an endorsement for cocaine use.  Despite his current anonymity as a cartoon character, he (and his theme song) continues to be iconic.

Mr. Trouble never hangs around,
when he hears this Mighty sound,

Here I come to save the day!
That means that Mighty Mouse is on the way!

Yes sir, when there is a wrong to right,
Mighty Mouse will join the fight!

On the sea or on the land,
He’s got the situation well in hand!

We know that when there’s danger, we’ll never dispair;
Because we know that when there’s danger he is there…
On the land on the sea in the air.

We’re not worrying at all
We just listen for his call
“Here I come to save the day!”
That means that Mighty Mouse is on the way.

When there is a wrong to right,
Mighty Mouse will joint the fight
“Here I come to save the day!”
That means that Mighty Mouse is on the way!
