A cross section of Hawaiian music, from lap-steel great Sol Hoopii to Ella Fitzgerald, with a large helping of slack-key guitar, lush instrumentals, gorgeous singing and melodic masterpieces, some once buried in the vinyl landfill and resurrected here for the first time.
Disc 1, From Hollywood to Honolulu 1931-1957 covers the early popularization of island music by native Hawaiians such as Andy Iona, who blended island melodies with swing, as well as performers one might not expect to see in this context: Louis Armstrong, Ethel Merman, Slim Whitman, Jo Stafford and Betty Boop are among those who put their spin on Hawaiian music.
The second disc, Splendor in the Grass Shack, 1958-1974, finds Ukuele Ike, The Ventures, Arthur Lyman, and Martin Denny all capitalizing on the Tiki craze in the late 1950s. The set s foray into 60s Tiki and exotica includes a Hawaiian version of the 1968 Fleetwood Mac song Albatross. And to add a little modern day nostalgia, the themes from Hawaii Five-O and Hawaiian Eye are here too.
Disc 3: Hawaiian Classics largely puts the spotlight on native Hawaiian musicians from the 20s and 30s, such as Kalama s Quartet, King Nawahi, Sol Hoopii, and Clara Inter, better known as Hilo Hattie.
The fourth disc, Contemporary Hawaiian Music, was assembled by Robert Armstrong and features his fine guitar playing and along with other collaborators strumming their way to paradise in a contemporary fashion that gives a nod to the great music you hear on the first three discs. Featured are the cool sounds of the Coconut Trio, the Sweet Hollywaiians, Ken and Bob (Ken Emerson & Robert Armstrong) and the Joy Buzzards to name a few.
Produced in 1980, this Christmas Album was produced by Meco Monardo (who had previously recorded Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk). Anthony Daniels voiced C-3PO and Ben Burtt provided the sounds for R2-D2 and Chewbacca. “”What Can You Get a Wookiee for Christmas (When He Already Owns a Comb)”” reached #69 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart in 1980. It was the third digitally recorded single in chart history. Jon Bon Jovi made his first recording ever on this album (credited as John Bongiovi), singing lead vocals on “R2-D2 We Wish You A Merry Christmas.” Bon Jovi did it as a favor to his cousin Tony Bongiovi, one of the producers of the album.
Deluxe Vinyl Replicas by L.M.L.R. constitute high quality reissued compact-discs which reproduce all the components of the original LPs and are their exact replicas in compact-disc size (5.3 x 5.3 inches), with authentic single or gatefold cardboard jackets and paper sleeves. In addition to the above, only for Christmas, each compact-disc Deluxe Vinyl Replica includes a red finish CD complete with the original label and a vinyl LP groove design to give it the look and feel of the original record album.
15 albums? 18 discs? What’s the story? Queen always had a special fondness for vinyl, the medium in which they first began to create, around 1970. As a matter of principle, every Queen studio album was offered at the time of original release on vinyl, even well into the era when CD’s had taken over as the medium of choice for most of the public. However, the final two albums, ‘Innuendo’ and ‘Made In Heaven’ were actually formatted primarily with the CD in mind, with a longer running time, so the contents had to be edited down to fit them on to the two sides of a vinyl album. Now, specially for this edition, for the first time, these two albums have been cut at full length as double vinyl LP’s – four sides each making up a vinyl set that is complete in every way.
The box-set offers many other special features. Most noticeable is the colored vinyl: designed for collectors, each album has been given a different color, in keeping with its original artwork, giving a unique record-deck experience. The color discs have been custom-produced especially for this set, using new material technology which ensures the sound quality is uncompromised.
There are more surprises in the box set; ‘Queen II’ originally never had a designated ‘A side’ or ‘B side’ – but ‘Side White’ and ‘Side Black’. For this new edition, the album has been cut on two separate discs, black and white, each with a custom etching on the reverse side, a nice bonus for collectors.
The collection has been five years in the making. Throughout this time Queen’s production team has worked extensively on all stages of this painstaking mastering process. The first step was the tape research; locating and confirming the correct versions and best sources for all tracks. Most notably, Under Pressure, plus five tracks on the ‘Innuendo’ album, were improved hugely after the discovery of better sources during this period. Particular attention was paid to the original releases to ensure that nothing was lost or changed for the worse by reverting to earlier sources.
The 18 vinyl LP box set comes with a lavishly illustrated 12 x 12 inch 108-page hardback book which features introductions to each album, quotes from Queen themselves, hand-written lyrics, rare photographs, memorabilia, and information on singles and videos – all made possible with unlimited access to Queen’s own archive plus the personal archives of Brian May, Roger Taylor and some generous fans. .
The Queen Studio Collection includes the albums Queen Queen II *, Sheer Heart Attack, A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, News of the World, Jazz, The Game, Flash Gordon, Hot Space, The Works, A Kind of Magic, The Miracle, Innuendo, and Made in Heaven.
* 2 disc special edition exclusive to the box set. 1 disc standard edition available separately.
The 12-CD box feature all of the material officially released by Bowie during the nascent stage of his career from 1969 to 1973. All of the formats include tracks that have never before appeared on CD/digitally as well as new remasters.
The boxed set accompanying book, 128 pages in the CD box, will feature rarely seen photos as well as technical notes about each album from producers Tony Visconti and Ken Scott, an original press review for each album, and a short foreword by legendary Kinks front man Ray Davies.
The CD boxed set will include faithfully reproduced mini-vinyl versions of the original albums and the CDs will be gold rather than the usual silver.

One of cinema’s most famous soundtracks finally gets the deluxe 2-CD treatment it deserves! John Williams won a well-deserved Academy Award for his 1975 scoring masterpiece Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg, featuring Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Shaw… and the most terrifying shark in movie history. Peter Benchley’s No. 1 best-selling book became a sensational hit under Spielberg, who himself claimed the John Williams music was responsible for at least half of the picture’s success. And what music! Basses, cellos and arguably the two most famous “theme” notes in history. Williams offers a score that is equal parts powerfully ferocious terror, rousing nautical adventure. Almost the entire soundtrack as it appears in the film was presented for the first time in its actual soundtrack form for the movie’s 25th anniversary in 2000 for the Decca label. The three-channel scoring masters were then newly-mixed into 5.1 sound for the film, with numerous sonic compromises made to create two-track stereo album masters, including significant reduction of the stereo imaging as well as liberal added reverb and noise reduction.
For this new 2-CD release on Intrada, we have returned to the original session tapes, courtesy Universal Pictures, and created brand new mixes with state-of-the-art technology, affording genuine stereo imaging with clarity of detail and dynamic range never-before available – all under the supervision of John Williams. Included are all of the actual soundtrack sequences plus several brief but previously unreleased cues and several alternate selections, all being heard for the first time ever! Enjoy an alternate version of the “Main Title” made early in the scoring sessions but never used, two versions of the previously unreleased “Shark Tows Orca”, two versions of the lengthy and incredible “Man Against Beast” cue, an extended version of “The Empty Raft”, an alternate version of “Quint Meets His End”, and more!
CD 2 features a remastered presentation of the famed 1975 re-recorded 35-minute MCA album. Finally, six selections from the Amity Town Band parade and beach sequences, arranged by Stu Phillips and Hal Mooney and recorded by Williams early in the sessions, bring this important set to a close. Mike Matessino restores and masters the audio, Scott Bettencourt authors the informative liner notes, Joe Sikoryak provides the colorful “flipper” cover artwork and booklet design. A soundtrack library essential! John Williams conducts.
