Most overrated thing about 2017? Subscription VOD platforms (too many, guys – enough already).
Most underrated thing about 2017? There are SO MANY amazing podcasts out there! Someone needs to start a user-friendly directory. Also — Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King on Netflix, American Made, Step (a GREAT documentary), Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer

Best TV Shows: Legion, Stranger Things, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Five Came Back, Doctor Who, The Crown; Honorable Mentions: Black Mirror’s “USS Callister”; the women on — also, whole 3rd and 3rd-to-last episodes of — Fargo; The Handmaid’s Tale (more an incomplete, as it’s excellent but I couldn’t bring myself to keep watching); the “Crisis on Earth-X” crossover; the late-night shows’ engagement with our maddening sociopolitical reality
Best Music: Addison Agen on The Voice; Laura Marling’s Semper Femina; Dion’s Kickin’ Child: The Lost Album 1965; Kamasi Washington’s “Truth”; Jon Brion’s score to Lady Bird; Bridget Kearney’s Won’t Let You Down; Honorable Mentions: Selena Gomez’s “Bad Liar”; Robert Cray & Hi-Rhythm’s eponymous album; Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings’ Soul of a Woman; Keb’ Mo’ & Taj Mahal’s “Diving Duck Blues” off TajMo; Noah Hawley’s Fargo and Legion soundtrack choices
Best Comics / Graphic Novels: My Favorite Thing Is Monsters OGN by Emil Ferris; Black [AF] by Kwanza Osajyefo & Jamal Igle, et al.; The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed by Mike Mignola + Chris Roberson & Paul Grist w/ Bill Crabtree; Mister Miracle by Tom King & Mitch Gerads; Glister TPB collection by Andi Watson; Honorable Mentions: Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai; Batman: Ego and Other Tails Deluxe Edition HC by Darwyn Cooke; Lumberjanes by Shannon Waters + Kat Leyh, et al. for the ongoing gift of reading it with my sister’s kids; Stages of Rot by Linnea Sterte; Hellboy: Into the Silent Sea OGN by Mike Mignola & Gary Gianni
Thing that you were most excited about in 2017? Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the “Crisis on Earth-X” crossover, The Americans, Wonder Woman, the Doctor Who Christmas episode, Hellboy: Into the Silent Sea, The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed
Thing that you were most disappointed about in 2017? Blade Runner 2049 (due purely to personal Ryan Gosling overload); Iron Fist; Game of Thrones switching into way too high a gear too fast; The Americans doing the opposite in its own next-to-last season; parts of Star Wars: The Last Jedi that, I’ll say trying to thread the needle in terms of spoilers, belong in Episode IX rather than VIII; American Gods for the whole being less than the sum of its parts when in fact we didn’t really even get a whole; my expectations for Justice League being so low it couldn’t even disappoint me (although it still frustrated me like hell)
Thing that you’re most looking forward to in 2018? The Americans’ final season; Black Lightning on TV — and in comics with the continuation of Tony Isabella & Clayton Henry’s Cold Dead Hands; David Bowie: The Last Five Years; the MCU slate of Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, and Ant-Man & The Wasp; the Hellboy omnibus collections; Doctor Who; the expanded HC reissue of Archie Goodwin’s legendary Blazing Combat; and last but certainly not least The Shape of Water, among other stuff technically dating to last year
