‘Deathbed #5’ (review)

Written by Joshua Williamson
Illustrated by Riley Rossmo
Published by DC Comics

I have been enjoying this fine series very much. It’s wildly trippy and well done. I’ll read anything Joshua Williamson writes and that Riley Rossmo draws separately. Put them together and it’s a can’t miss book for me!

This book focuses on an “Allan Quatermain” type of character if his world was an acid trip.

Antonio Luna is the hero in question and we have been to some crazy places in the last few issues. Luna has been trying to fulfill his last remaining goal.

And what is that goal?

Simple. He wants to walk on the moon.

Williamson imbues his main character with emotion and pathos. Luna doesn’t care if he lives or dies to fulfill this goal here.

As he travels between different realms,  his companion Val is there to keep his ego in check.  Will he and Val make it to the moon?

The last few pages has a curious answer to that question.

The best scene in the book comes near the end when Luna has a breakdown. It’s a dark moment where he apologizes to Val for all he has done. It’s simple and to the point and it’s strangely moving. I like that Williamson allows his characters to breathe and emote. It pays off extremely well here.

The art by Rossmo is creative and full of energy. Everything is exciting to look at, including the panel layouts.

This team really has a good book on their hands. I can’t wait to see how it ends.

RATING: A-
