‘Harley Quinn #45’ (review)

Written by Sam Humphries
Illustrated by John Timms
Published by DC Comics

My initial skepticism about cracking open this hilariously enjoyable trip to Apokolips starring Harley Quinn was dispelled in the first couple of pages.

This is the DC equivalent of Deadpool 2 in comic form. I haven’t been checking in on creator Sam Humphries for a while now, though I was a fan of watching his rise to stardom at Marvel. His fun style translates well into the adventures of Harleen Quinzel.

In this ‘ish, Harley is taking a break from super-heroing (or is she a baddie? I always forget these days!) for a bit by heading to the beach for some much needed R & R when two Female Furies boom over from Apokolips show up to ruin her day.

It turns out that Granny Goodness wants to recruit Harley to be one of these Furies!

Perhaps in an homage to one of Kirby’s greatest creations, Thor, Harley gets herself her own Cosmic Kracklin’ hammer on Apokolips and bashes her way through any test Granny Goodness set up for her.

What’s next is that she squares off against Apokolips’ own Petite Tina!

The Fourth World is a great place to stick Harley Quinn and unlike her other appearances lately, she is on her own here with her newfound powers and very own Mjolner.

This is a great tribute to the Kirby stuff while also showing the environs of Apokolips as a Star Wars type of planet with citizens that are usually forgotten about. Glad to see Humphries take Harley to a classic comic book setting and set her loose there!

I’m in for this wild ride, this issue is the first of three comics in this arc as he takes over the title from Amanda Connor and Jimmy Palmiotti’s long run.
