‘Hit-Girl #5’ (review)

Written by Jeff Lemire
Illustrated by Eduardo Risso
Published by Image Comics

This issue is kind of a landmark issue in the Kick-Ass universe.

It’s really the first time we have seen another writer take on the Hit-Girl character.

Luckily, it’s Jeff Lemire writing this story. He starts off strong and doesn’t let up for the entire issue.

The issue starts off with Mindy’s leg caught in a bear trap. She’s in the middle of Canada in a snowy landscape.

How the hell did Hit-Girl get here and how the hell is she going to get out of this?

Oh, and there’s a dead body on the ground next to her.

We then flash back to three days later and we are in a bar. Mindy of course starts a fight looking for Information. She’s looking for a heroin dealer named Billy Baker. And then a big fight breaks out. It’s a fight that is magnificently drawn by Risso.

Hit-Girl looks for Billy Baker for the rest of the issue. Yes, the entire issue leads up to the beginning of the issue.

Mindy, of course, ends up with her leg caught in the bear trap. And then she gets an unexpected visitor right at the end.

The book moves at a fast pace.

Lemire doesn’t waste time. He gets things moving quick and doesn’t let up. He’s got a great handle on Mindy’s character. Lemire also makes yet another comic that is accessible and easy to read. He always writes a comic book that isn’t bogged down in nonsense and that is certainly the case here.

The art by Risso is tops. I love his work and the compositions he creates. He and Lemire work great together.

This is the first chapter of their short run. It’s excellent and a good read overall.

RATING: A-
