‘Nancy Drew #1’ (review)

Written by Kelly Thompson
Illustrated by Jenn St-Onge
Published by Dynamite Entertainment

Kelly Thompson has reimagined Nancy Drew for the modern day audience!

I have never read any Nancy Drew stories before this so it’s a completely new experience for me. And it’s a completely wonderful experience. This isn’t a book that I would normally grab but once I opened it, it hooked me completely.

The issue opens with Nancy climbing up to a treehouse to gather a clue. She is in the middle of solving a crime that happened at her high school. She finishes that case during a high school football game (it’s a fun scene).

So that leaves Nancy with some well earned time off, right?

Wrong.

Nancy goes home and takes a shower. When she gets out of the shower she gets a ransom note. The note talks about a secret from her past. It says things like “I know what you did” and things along those lines.

It’s a great setup by Thompson and we are off to the races!

Nancy cancels everything to head home to Bayport. She runs into Bess Martin and a few of her older friends. Should she trust them? Should she trust anyone? And then someone who we don’t see tries to kill her. It’s all very exciting!

This book is well done and has some genuine emotion. That’s because Thompson writes some great characters and situations. The art is decent enough as well. It’s a good first issue that intrigues me. I’ve never read a Nancy Drew story. I’m just glad my first experience was one as good as this one.

RATING: A-
