The Man is Steel series by Bendis was incredible. But was it a fluke? Can Bendis continue his streak here, the first issue of a new ongoing?
Or will he fall on his face completely?
Well, Bendis just hits another home run. Let’s get that out of the way. It’s great.
The issue opens with Superman flying through space looking for Jon and Lois. The problem is, space is so big, he has no idea where to even start looking. Bendis immediately shows drama from the first page as Superman is lost of where to even start his search. It’s genuine and pretty neat.
After some flashbacks that demonstrate Clark’s loneliness away from his family, we see that Superman needs a new place for his home.
So it’s time for the Fortress of Solitude to move! He ends up in moving it to the Bermuda Triangle which is pretty great and leads to some story potential.
Superman then has a conversation with J’onn Jonzz the Martian Manhunter. It’s well handled. But J’onn makes a strange suggestion which Clark balks at. It leads into the shock ending which has to do with the Phantom Zone! And it looks like Rogol Zaar may be returning sooner than we had all thought!
The story is tops. I’m glad they chose Ivan Reis as the artist for this issue. He draws a great classic Superman who fits perfectly in the modern day world. The action scenes are sharp and his panel design is wonderful.
Overall, I think this is another feather in the cap of Brian Michael Bendis. He’s giving us a fresh take on a classic comic book character.
