‘Action Comics #1002’ (review)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Illustrated by Patrick Gleason
Published by DC Comics

I am loving the Brian Michael Bendis take over in the Superman titles. I feel like I did when I first started reading comics. He has new and fresh ideas in every issue and I’m at the edge of my seat waiting for each issue to come out. It’s just so much fun to read these books.

This is another great issue in his run thus far!

The book opens with a body being dropped into the streets of Metropolis. It literally just falls from the sky. The person’s who falls from the sky has an alias of “Yogurt.” I laughed.

Who dropped this guy from the sky?

Well, all fingers are pointing to Superman.

After that harrowing opening, we are placed in The Daily Planet newsroom. Perry White is having a meeting with his reporters. He eventually sends Clark Kent out to obtain the truth of what is happening. Has Superman gone psycho? Or are there more sinister forces in play here? And will Clark piece this all together?

The rest of the issue is Clark tracking down the responsible party. This is really cool as we actually get to see Clark Kent do his day job. And Bendis has a really great handle on it.

The dialogue crackles with fun and research as usual. I just love him on Superman.

We also get to see the return of The Guardian in this issue. Bendis does a great job writing him as well. Patrick Gleason also has a great take on the character and makes him vital rather than just a throwaway character as he usually portrayed. It’s great to see.

Gleason is also leaving with this issue. I’m sad to see him go but he leaves us with a high as this is some of his best work.

The ending also has a bit of a surprise and I love how it’s all set up. I can’t wait for the next issue as always. Great stuff.

RATING: A
