‘Detective Comics #986’ (review)

Written by Bryan Hill
Illustrated by Philippe Briones
Published by DC Comics

Bryan Hill has done a really nice job on this story arc. He’s written a really great story here, full of action and drama. He also, in a sense, disregarded Tynion’s run a bit both in style and tone.

That’s a good thing in my opinion as that run was getting tiresome quick. Hill has made the title dark again and things are the way they should be.

Hill has made this villain named Karma a true force to be reckoned with. He taps into a hero’s emotions and makes them crazy. It’s an awesome character and someone who actually feels like a real threat.

The opening pages has Batman telling Black Lightning to gather his army and make sure that the kidnapped children are safe.

Then, Batman runs and goes head to head with the villainous Karma! I have to admit the illustration of Batman and Karma’s face off made me almost applaud (good thing I didn’t, I would have dropped the book).

Artist Phillips Briones does such a great job Illustrating that face off. He does a great job drawing the entire book as well. The fight between Batman and Karma is completely brutal. Hill and Briones work overtime to capture a memorable scene. Make sure to notice those character shots and camera angles! They’re great!

After that fight scene, we see that Batman and gang might need more help than they originally thought. That’s when we see who they call for help. The last shot of the book shows us who is going to assist them. And I’m excited.

This is a book that is only getting better and better. I would like to beg DC to keep Bryan Hill on as the writer. He’s brought back my enthusiasm and excitement for a title that I felt was just coasting. This is some great stuff, kids.

RATING: B+
