‘Scarlet #2’ (review)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Illustrated by Alex Maleev
Published by DC Comics

The second issue of this new series picks up right where the last issue left off! And it’s a doozy. Bendis and Maleev ratchet up the tension here and it has to be read to be believed!

The issue starts with a flashback from three weeks prior. There was something called The Rise of Portland.

The Rise was a full scale riot. Maleev handles the intensity of the riot well with his art. It’s extremely well done. This all leads to a hell of a dramatic moment.

We see our main character, Scarlet, being greeted by a man named Troy.

Troy says that the President of the United States wants to talk to Scarlet.

He says that the President wants her to give the city of Portland back. When you see this scene, well, you just know that she isn’t going to let that happen.

A discussion follows. This discussion lasts a few pages. Since it’s Bendis writing the book, the discussion is marvelous. It feels like an action scene it’s so well written. And it leads us to even bigger things.

The rest of the issue is pretty much Scarlet deciding what her answer is going to be. She finally decides on the last few pages. And it’s quite an explosive way that she answers the president.

This is a gutsy book. Bendis doesn’t hold back. The art is very good too and well composed. Everyone should be reading this. It’s a book that’s being crafted at the highest level of quality.

RATING: A
