So here it is.
The 100 page Walmart issue everyone is clamoring for.
We have had original stories in this format the last two months but they didn’t exactly wow us. On top of that, the previous issues have been a downright pain in the balls to get.
So, they decided to put Tom King and Andy Kubert on a serialized Superman story. Will this make tracking down a copy worth it?
I have to say absolutely.
This story is spectacular and everything a Superman story should be.
Tom King decides to just go for it and the results are absolutely stunning. This could have been just a throwaway, but instead the creative team decided to do something else. They decided to do a story that is of top quality.
The issue opens with Batman asking for Superman’s help. An elderly couple was murdered. They had four adopted children. Two of them were murdered. One is in the hospital and one is missing. It’s quite a dark start for a Walmart comic!
Batman tells Superman to visit the girl in the hospital and he does. He asks where the missing sister was taken.
She points up and says “Up. In the sky.”
I found that extremely dark as it is also the title of this story.
King doesn’t pull any punches.
We then are back at The Daily Planet. Perry yells at Clark for trying to investigate a crime in another city like Gotham. He is especially mad because the crime had happened yesterday! They have more than enough problems in Metropolis and Perry White makes that known.
Superman then tidies up some things in Metropolis. He gets together with Green Lantern. They fight a dinosaur while Hal tells Clark that he will send an alert throughout space for the missing girl.
Nothing turns up.
Then, the little girl that’s in the hospital dies. And so Clark decides its time to go find the missing girl in space.
This story is short but it’s impactful and awesome. King writes from the heart and it’s just amazing. The art by Kubert is fantastic and emotional. This is a great first chapter in this story. It’s also the best issue Walmart has produced in this new venture. Bravo to all.
