‘Detective Comics #990’ (review)

Written by James Robinson
Illustrated by Stephen Segovia
Published by DC Comics

This has been a nice little treat. James Robinson returns to writing Batman for this short story arc, and all is right with the world.

He is joined with artist Stephen Segovia as a collaborator and the duo work incredibly well together. This has been a nice surprise thus far and I’m enjoying the heck out of it.

This is part three of their story. It starts off with Batman and Two-Face having a full out battle.

Robinson makes it really fun, especially with the dialogue. Two-Face fires a gun at Batman.  Batman just scoffs and says “I’ve fought New Gods, man.” It’s touches like this that really make the book stand out. Two-Face calls one of his goons “disposable”. The goons’ feelings get hurt.

Two-Face then shoots the goon in the face to prove his point. Again, it’s another darkly funny Robinson touch.

Two-Face gets away by causing an explosion. This leaves Bruce to regain his composure and track Harvey down. It also lets him have time to figure out Harvey’s plans. Bruce and Duke have a conversation and it propels the book forward.

Then, we cut over to the Gotham City Police Department. We have a small scene there and then Two-Face attacks!

It’s a particularly brutal battle. This leads to the cliffhanger ending where Batman tracks down Two-Face on top of a bridge. And then it looks like things are really going to get out of hand!

The art is some of the best of Segovia’s career. The guy is a marvel. I can’t say enough about it. This has turned out to be a solid tale in the continuing story of the Caped Crusader!

RATING: A-
