The Evolution of Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway has come a long way since she broke onto our screens playing frizzy haired teen Mia Thermopolis in The Princes Diaries back in 2001.  She has since established herself as one of Hollywood’s top leading ladies with award nominations galore and she now has the honour of hosting the 2011 Academy awards in February 2011.

With her feet firmly on the ladder to success and with her performance in Love & Other Drugs receiving rave reviews, which hits Blu-ray and DVD 1st March, we take a look back at Anne’s meteoric rise to fame.

The Princess Diaries – 2001
Anne Hathaway’s big break came in the starring role in The Princess Diaries over a decade ago, which was a commercial success and Hathaway was widely praised for her performance.

The film directed by Garry Marshall is based on Meg Cabot’s 2000 novel of the same name. Ann stars as Mia Thermopolis, a teenager who discovers that she is the heir to the throne of the fictional Genovia, ruled by her grandmother, Queen dowager Clarisse Renaldi, who is portrayed by Julie Andrews.

Brokeback Mountain – 2005
The Ang Lee directed story of forbidden love saw Hathaway and Gyllenhaal team up for the first time as husband and wife.  The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, with Ang Lee scooping the award for Best Director.  Both Heath Ledger and Gyllenhaal received nominations for their roles as the cowboys in love.

The Devil Wears Prada – 2006
Based on the bestselling novel by Lauren Weisberger, The Devil Wears Prada catapulted Hathaway into chick flick territory.  Alongside Meryl Streep, she stars as wannabe journalist Andy who takes a job as an assistant to Miranda Priestly, editor of fashion magazine Runway, in the hope that it will lead to bigger and better things.  At first frumpy Andy doesn’t fit in but she is willing to do and change anything to get her foot in the door.

Becoming Jane – 2007
Starring alongside James McAvoy in this biographical period drama, Hathaway took centre stage playing a young pre-fame Jane Austen. Proving her worth with an impressive British accent, the film’s success led to a Best Actress nomination at the British Independent Film Awards.

Rachel Getting Married – 2008
Rachel Getting Married showed Anne’s serious side as she played a woman returning home from rehab to attend her sister’s wedding.  Hathaway received rave reviews for her performance as the awkward addict earning her a Best Actress nomination at The Academy Awards.  She was however piped to the post by Kate Winslet for her role in The Reader.

Love & Other Drugs – 2011
Gyllenhaal and Hathaway team up again in this romantic drama/comedy.  Hathaway portrays Maggie, an alluring free spirit who won’t let anyone – or anything – tie her down. But she meets her match in Jamie (Gyllenhaal), whose relentless and nearly infallible charm serve him well with the ladies and in the cutthroat world of pharmaceutical sales. Maggie and Jamie’s evolving relationship takes them both by surprise, as they find themselves under the influence of the ultimate drug: love.

Now, Anne is prepping to film The Dark Knight Rises, playing Catwoman and hosting the Oscars with James Franco on February 27th, and Love & Other Drugs will be released on Blu-ray and DVD March 1st.
