I’m not too surprised about this rumor, since director Quentin Tarantino had originally wanted Leonardo DiCaprio for the part of Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds. Ironically, Christopher Waltz, who ended up winning the Oscar for best supporting actor for that role is the only official cast member confirmed for the film.
For those not in the know, Django Unchained will be Quentin Tarantino’s next film… a Spaghetti western which follows a ex-slave who teams with a German bounty hunter to save his wife from an evil plantation owner in the old South.
According to Deadline, DiCaprio would play the role of Calvin Candie, that very same evil plantation owner who tortures his female slaves and has his male slaves fight one another to the death.
Remember, not all rumors are true.
A few weeks ago they were talking about Will Smith playing the lead character and he’s already out. Other rumored contenders for the part include Idris Elba, Chris Tucker and Jamie Foxx.
I’ve always gotten a bit of a douche bag vibe from many of DiCaprio’s characters. If this casting pans out, Tarantino should be able to masterfully tap into that vibe, which will be perfect for this role.
