Awhile back FOG reported that Tom Cruise was in negotiations to play Jack Reacher, the popular main character from Lee Child’s best selling novel, One Shot.
Now, Deadline is confirming Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions have struck a deal with Tom Cruise to play the role. The film will start production in the early fall and Christopher McQuarrie (Way of the Gun) will be directing the adaptation.
One Shot deals with Reacher investigating a case about a sniper killing five people before being arrested and like most cases Reacher investigates, nothing is what it seems.
In the books, Reacher is a very menacing figure, he’s written as 6’5” and weighing somewhere between 220-250 pounds. Cruise is far from the character physically, but Child told Deadline he is excited about Cruise playing the role. Also going on to state the casting is more about an intimidating presence than the physical size.
This created some buzz among fans of the novel when it was first announced that Cruise may play Reacher, since the majority of them felt like Cruise didn’t fit the role physically. Looks like they are going to have to live with it now.
Cruise and McQuarrie worked together previously on Valkyrie and Cruise also brought McQuarrie in to polish up the script for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.
Cruise is currently shooting Rock of Ages.
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol will arrive in theaters on December 16, 2011.
