Two days ago it was announced that Spike Lee would be directing the remake of the South Korean film, Oldboy.
Now, Twitch is reporting that Josh Brolin is No. 1 on Mandate’s casting wish list to play the lead role in their US remake. No formal offer has been made at this point.
The original Oldboy was based on a Japanese magma and was released in 2004. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival that year and is considered to be one of the high points of Asian cinema.
Twitch also reports script writer Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, Poseidon) is using both the Korean film and the Japanese magma book as a basis for his script, with roughly twenty percent of the script being all new material. Mandate is comparing their approach to the script to that of The Departed, which took the basic concept and characters from Infernal Affairs, but added whole new elements to the story.
I love the idea of casting Brolin in the lead role, let’s hope it happens.
Who else do you think would make a good lead for the remake? My second choice would be Russell Crowe, I like him best when he plays an everyman a la The Insider, State of Play, The Next Three Days.
