According to wegotthiscovered.com, at the Toronto International Film Festival Franco confirmed rumors that he would direct an adaptation of McCarthy’s earlier book Blood Meridian, but that the project was on hold. He also announced that he would be making a movie based on the third book Child of God.
The story of Child of God follows the life of Lester Ballard who is a violent man that attempts to exist outside the social order. He cuts off ties to parents, homes, friends, and any other ties and falls into a life of crime and degradation. At one point he falls literally and figuratively to the level of a cave dweller.
While there is currently no information on when the film will be shot, we do know that Franco works fast. He directed the movie Sal, based on the life of Sal Mineo, in 9 days. We also know that he is very busy making two documentaries right now one based on his time on General Hospital and the other about porn website Kink.com. He is also promoting his installation/documentary Memories of Idaho which he collaborated with Gus Van Sant on.
Here’s what Franco had to say at TIFF:
We shot a 20 minute test of it (Blood Meridian) that turned out pretty well… we were gearing up to do the feature but that for various reasons is on hold, but we are going to make a movie based on his (Cormac McCarthy’s) third book Child Of God.
While he is attempting to do many things, he did have to drop out of what would have been his Broadway debut in Sweet Bird of Youth. An adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ work, he would have starred with Nicole Kidman in the play.
