GEORGE CLOONEY To Star In One-Night-Only Play 8

George Clooney is making a stance by signing on to star in the premiere of 8, a stage production about Proposition 8.

According to THR, “8” chronicles the “historic Federal court trial overturning Proposition 8.” If you don’t remember, that was the ballot measure that denied gay and lesbian marriage in California. The production written by Dustin Lance Black will be directed by Rob Reiner and run for only one night.

The single show on March 3rd will run at the Los Angeles Wilshire Ebell Theatre and proceeds from the show are being given to the American Foundation for Equal Rights.

Clooney said while talking about gay marriage that “It is astonishing that gay and lesbian Americans are still treated as second-class citizens.” He added that he is “confident that, very soon, the laws of this nation will reflect the basic truth that gay and lesbian people – like all human beings – are born equal in dignity and rights.”

Black, writer of Oscar winner Milk and J. Edgar says that “People need to witness what happened in the Proposition 8 trial, if for no other reason than to see inequality and discrimination unequivocally rejected in a court of law where truth and facts matter.”

Currently the tapes from the federal trial are waiting for a ruling to see if they will be released to the public. The very short run of 8 may be the closest thing to the tapes there is.

In New York, a showing in September starred Morgan Freeman, Ellen Barkin, John Lithgow, and Bradley Whitford. The cast for the LA performance will be announced soon.
