George Lucas, the man behind so many movies might just be calling it quits after his latest movie Red Tails makes it’s theatrical run.
After six Star Wars Films, four Indiana Jones, and a bunch of other films, George Lucas sounds like he’s done making movies. In a story for the New York Times, Lucas said “I’m retiring. I’m moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff.”
The director has decided that instead of making more big name films he will be working on personal films that are more small scope and mostly shown in art houses. The movies will be more like what he started making in the 60’s at U.S.C. film school.
Rick McCallum, one of Lucas’ long time producers said “Once this is finished, he’s done everything he’s ever wanted to do.” Lucas assumed that he would be creating art house stuff for a good portion of his career but then Star Wars happened. Now he is glad to return to art films and has embraced a new destiny.
Talking about his decision to stop he joked about his friend and longtime partner in many projects Steven Spielberg. He said “Steven is a born director, which is why he’s such a genius. He’s truly a cinematic genius. But he’s like a kid with a video game. It’s like: ‘C’mon, we’re going. We’re leaving now.’ Death comes. . . . And then Steven goes: ‘I got one more game! I got one more game!’ ”
“One day,” Lucas says, “they’re just going to unplug it and say, ‘You’ve got to go home now.’ ”
