After being a secret agent with aliens, Tommy Lee Jones will move on to the historical drama Emperor.
In a press release it was announced that Jones has signed on to play General Douglas MacArthur. MacArthur was the “de facto ruler of Japan as Supreme Commander of the occupying forces. The film also stars Matthew Fox and is set to be directed by Peter Webber (Girl with a Pearl Earring).
According to producer Gary Foster, “Tommy will bring strength, intelligence, and gravitas to the portrayal of General Douglas MacArthur, a legendary American hero.”
The historical film is about the period of time after the Japanese surrender in WWII. Fox plays a Japanese expert on MacArthur’s staff who is ultimately given the task of deciding if Emperor Hirohito should be tried and hanged as a war criminal.
The story is based on true events and real people faced with a difficult task that could affect international relationships everywhere. In addition to the major storyline, there is also a smaller love story between Fox’s character and Aya, a Japanese exchange student he fell in love with.
