Pretenders Among Us

There are Pretenders among us. Geniuses with the ability to become anyone they want to be.

In 1963, a corporation known as the Centre isolated a young Pretender named Jarod, and exploited his genius for their research.

Then one day, their Pretender ran away….

From 1996 to 2000 (and for two TNT network movies thereafter) a series entitled The Pretender began each episode with that opening narration.

The show centered on Jarod, who used his abilities to help people and right wrongs, while being pursued by a ruthless corporation/think tank/government agency known as “The Centre.”

Jarod’s gift was the unique ability to be whatever he wanted, from bodyguard to surgeon, truck driver to lawyer.

If, as the series promises, there are other pretenders in the world, would it be possible to identify them?

I immediately thought of a woman who qualifies. She’s a doctor, lawyer, nurse, student, teacher, rock star, veterinarian, princess, pilot…

Indeed the list seems endless.

Like Jarod, she has no last name.

Like Jarod, her destiny is controlled by a giant corporation.

I wonder if she dreams of escaping from their control.

I wonder if, like Jarod, she wants to learn about her parents and her past, and claim some measure of humanity, personhood, and freedom.

The evil corporation at the center of her life is Mattel, and her name is Barbie.
