TAKEI BACK THE NIGHT with GeeksOUT NYC

The New York City based group Geeks OUT will be celebrating the 75th birthday of the legendary George Takei this Friday with a grand party called, wait for it,  TAKEI BACK THE NIGHT!

The event promises a Takei-themed art show, a fund-raiser and a geek party.

What more could you ask for?

Fresh from last year’s standing-room only panel at Comic-Con called “It Gets Better (with Comics),” GeeksOUT continues to fight for visibility at the Con and beyond for the LGBT community.

I caught up with Joey Stern, President of GeeksOUT about the event for the scoop on Friday’s event…

Is there a cover charge for the event?
It’s $10 but that includes a raffle ticket and a beer.

What should people expect art auction costs to be around?
The art will be raffled off throughout the night, so you may be able to get a piece for less than $20!

How did the event come about and is George Takei (or do you think he is) aware of it?
We wanted to cement George as a gay-geek icon. This event’s goal is really to engender that discussion. He knows about the event and is on board! He even just gave an interview with Next Magazine about it.

Are all or any of the artists Trekkies or Trekkers?
Many. Though some of them are just general fans of his work.

What would you say about George Takei is cooler – his sense of humor or his awesome voice?
Oh man, choosing between those is impossible, I would miss having “oh, my” as a cultural phrase most I think.

Will there be a shirtless Takei impersonator attacking guests with a sword?
It depends how drunk I get.
