Highlander is back and this time Ryan Reynolds is the one for the job.
According to Variety, the franchise will see a reboot with a new project that currently has Juan Carlos Fresnadilo set to direct. Reynolds is in talks for the part, but it’s uncertain whether an offer has actually been made or if it’s just rumor.
In the original story, “an immortal swordsman battled other immortal warriors through the centuries.” Although that was the plot of the original that Matt Holloway and Art Marcum wrote, it’s not yet known what will stay in the storyline for the new movie.
Reynolds has been looking at the part, but he also has other parts and offers that he could pursue. He recently starred in Safe House, and it’s expected that he will be resuming his part as Deadpool in a new movie with Fox, where he is the star.
The project was first picked up when Summit acquired the rights in 2008. Lionsgate-Summit will produce the project with Nel Moritz’s Original Film banner and RCR Media Group. The first film starred Christopher Lambert and led to multiple sequels and a popular television show. I’m really hoping that we hear other casting news so we have the chance to yell “there can be only one.
