It’s been a busy day for Marvel movie rumors.
AICN has discovered that the upcoming X-Men: First Class sequel, which is due on July 18, 2014, might actually adapt one of the series’ most beloved storylines. Apparently, 20th Century Fox has registered “DAYS OF FUTURE PAST” with the MPAA Title Registration Bureau.
Based on a two-part storyline that originally appeared in Uncanny X-Men #141 & 142, Days of Future Past was a time travel story that chronicled the future ramifications of a world where Senator Kelly is murdered by The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, which results in the future hunting, internment and killing of the Mutant population. Many of the X-Men have been murdered and it’s up to a ragtag team under the leadership of Magneto to protect the future Kate Pryde as she travels back to her teenage Kitty identity in hopes to save the future.
Previously, Magneto’s involvement in the Kennedy assassination has been mentioned in connection with the sequel, so presumably we might see JFK replace Kelly in the story (as well as Kate/Kitty). It might also be an interesting opportunity to use some previous actors from the franchise (Sirs Stewart and McKellen, obviously Mr. Jackman).
But it might be something else entirely.
It could represent a lead in to a new X-Men franchise.
Using the alternate timestream plot device that worked so well with JJ Abrams’ Star Trek reboot, First Class 2 could result in a timeline that keeps the original films intact, but also provide a fresh start; allowing recastings, different team line-ups and a fresh take. At this point, I’d pretty much guess that there’s only one person that Fox would be hesitant to recast and who could serve as a bridge from the original to the revamp.
