Unless you’ve been living under a rock somewhere you are no doubt aware of the 80-year-old woman in Spain who took it upon herself to restore a 19th century fresco that featured Jesus even though she wasn’t trained in the art of restoration or even a painter.

The result of which has become this month’s favorite meme featuring beautiful things like this:

But beyond the hilariousness of this news story comes a darker side where the religious and the heathens are locked in a battle over whether or not making fun of the botched painting is sacrilegious.

Is it okay to laugh at Monkey Jesus or be appalled at how the internet is mocking the King of Kings?

Too bad Jesus himself can’t let everyone know…
