Empathy is a key ingredient in creating a life that is full of connection: to other people, to situations, to the world. And it is the one element that humans have the most difficulty with. After-all, the temptation to be true to only oneself and to ignore other people is a trait that has been within us since our very beginning, it allowed us to survive.
But considering that we have the ability to question our own motives and make changes, it seems reasonable to assume that as we humans evolve intellectually, there’s a good chance that empathy could end up being the one aspect of our humanity that can save us all from certain annihilation (and I’m speaking of our desire to end up killing ourselves through violence, weapons of mass destruction, or general malaise).
While you may not be familiar with shame and empathy researcher Dr. Brené Brown, this animated short based upon her talk on the power of empathy will certainly help you understand the importance of choosing empathy over sympathy and how it can help change the path upon which humanity is heading.
Yes it’s a bit cerebral, but the cuteness of the animation will help the message go down a little easier…as will multiple viewings (hint, hint).
Video after the break.
