The Retro Report: Heavenly Credits, Mutual Fonts, The Ever-Evolving Day & More

The Doris Day Show is the only television series in history, in any category, and of any genre, that changed its core format every year for five TV seasons.

Did you know that Tony Randall named Elinor Donahue’s character Miriam Welby in original TV edition of The Odd Couple – with Randall as Felix and Jack Klugman as Oscar – as tribute to Donahue’s former Father Knows Best TV-dad Robert Young (who later starred as the lead in Marcus Welby, M.D.)?

It’s true.

Did you know that the same font used in the opening credits of The Bionic Woman was the same font used in the opening credits of Klugman’s Quincy? That’s true, too. Both shows were produced by Universal, while Quincy aired on NBC, and TBW aired first on ABC and then NBC (in its final third season), which of course is now on corporate entity (known as NBCUniversal).

Major movie stars Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart both found it challenging to transfer their appeal to the small screen in short-lived half-hour series in the 1970’s with Fonda’s The Smith Family (co-starring Ron Howard, post The Andy Griffith Show, and pre-Happy Days), and The Jimmy Stewart Show (co-starring the beauty of Julie Adams, the lead goddess in the 1954 big-screen classic, The Creature from the Black Lagoon).

Old friends Fonda and Stewart

And hey –  whatever happened to Arnie, that other little unappreciated sitcom from the early ‘70s (starring Hershel Bernardi)?

The Partridge Family was more sophisticated than The Brady Bunch, and funnier, too.

The opening credit sequence for Highway to Heaven or Touched By An Angel?  You pick.

Peace to lovers of all things classic.
