The Retro Report: Sapphire & Steel Gets Cross, Kroftt Goes To The Dogs, Mike Brady Moonlights & More

Luther and Crossbones creator Neil Cross is set to resurrect the 1970’s sci-fi series Sapphire & Steel, which featured Joanna Lumley and David McCallum (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.) as time-travelling special agents protecting the universe from evil.

Regis Philbin will be reuniting with former long-time daytime-talking co-host Kathie Lee Gifford in a regular capacity for later-day segments of NBC’s Today Show.

Saturday morning producing gods Sid and Marty Krofft, best known for iconic shows from the 70’s, including Sigmund & the Sea Monsters, Land of the Lost, Far Out Space Nuts and H.R. Pufnstuf, are producing the new 20-episode Nickelodeon series, Mutt & Jeff, a live-actioner show about dogs.

Without knowing it, Diahann Carroll seemed to do a very strange impersonation of Barbara Streisand while performing on ABC’s The Hollywood Palace Variety Show in 1968.

Bewitched legends Elizabeth Montgomery, Dick York and Agnes Moorehead each guest-starred on episodes of The Twilight Zone that had to do with “silent thoughts” and featured very little dialogue, especially the segments with Montgomery and Moorehead, in which there was no dialogue at all!

Did you know that Mary Tyler Moore once auditioned to play Danny Thomas’ daughter in Make Room For Daddy/The Danny Thomas Show – and that the school-hall locker scenes from Life Goes On inspired historic TV producer Aaron Spelling to create Beverly Hills, 90210? All true.

Paramount should do a new superhero TV version of Star Trek, combining this team: Captain Kirk, Spock, Odo, Data, Dr. Bashire, and Counselor Troi.

Sorry….the new trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is still too bleak…too dark…and too much of a drag. And what the HECK did they do to Wonder Woman?! She’s not Xena, you know (although now, apparently, she is). Either way, superheroes should be happy and strong, not miserable and weak-minded – and be presented with uplifting positive superhero scenes like this….

Robert Reed played a regular role on CBS’s Mannix TV series while simultaneously playing everybody’s favorite TV dad on ABC’s The Brady Bunch.

The opening credit sequence for Cannon or Barnaby Jones? You pick.

Peace to lovers of all things classic.

Writer/producer Herbie J Pilato has worked for Bravo, Syfy, A&E, E!, TLC, NBCUniversal, Sony and Warner Bros.
