COOL SHIRTS: A Look At T-Shirt Offerings From NerdKungFu.com!

Written by Stefan Blitz

There’s no doubt that the boldest and most personal fashion statement anyone can make is in one’s selection of t-shirt.  Personally, I love them.  It’s an opportunity to show the world what pop culture I care about, a wonderful flashback to the past and a fantastic way to initiate any nerd discussion.

For this installment of Cool Shirts, I took a look at some of the shirts from Nerd Kung Fu, which might very well have the largest selection of pop culture t-shirts that I’ve ever seen.  Among their latest additions are over dozens of new designs centered on RoboCop, Karate Kid, John Wayne, Cry Baby, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Edward Scissorhands, plus new Star Trek, Batman, Superman and Star Wars designs and much more! They also carry shirts in sizes small through 7XL and the site is filled with lots of nerdy trivia on the history of t-shirts!

Nerd Kung Fu isn’t satisfied carrying just a huge t-shirt selection.  They are also currently selling a wide array of posters and a number of geek-centric ephemera including coffee mugs, shot glasses, pint glasses, blankets, wallets, buttons, magnets, playing cards, hoodies and much more.

There is something for virtually any nerdcentric provocation and a one-stop shop for the holiday gift giver.

These are some of my recent favorites.

Bright Jaws T-Shirt

This comic art style rendition of the Jaws poster makes me long for a comic book adaptation in a similar style.

There’s a great sense of movement and the water itself becomes a character as the Great White shark pushes itself to the surface to take a bite out of Chrissie Watkins.  Plus, the air bubbles look cool as hell.

The color work is also impressive and would also look pretty fantastic reproduced as a black light poster so you can hang out, stare at it and try to understand the deeper meaning of a statement like, “It’s only an island if you look at it from the water.”

Here’s to swimmin’ with bow legged women…

 Elvis Jailhouse Rock T-Shirt

This quadtych image features the iconic King of Rock n’ Roll, Elvis Presley from the 1957 film, Jailhouse Rock.  In the film, after serving time for manslaughter, young Vince Everett (Elvis) becomes a teenage rock star. Which, is obviously a likely scenario for any up and coming musician.

The film also debuted several songs in addition to the title track including, “Young and Beautiful”, “I Want to Be Free”, “Don’t Leave Me Now”, “Treat Me Nice” and “(You’re So Square) Baby I Don’t Care”.

Thank you.  Thank you very much.

Bad News Bears Vintage T-Shirt

They don’t make them like this anymore, but it sure is reflective of the era of my youth.  Among the digressions that would never fly today in teh movies is a Little League coach who empties his beer can and fills it with Scotch before taking a car full of misfit kids out to play baseball.

With standout players Amanda Whurlitzer and Kelly Leak, and a team that includes such pre-teen miscreants as Tanner Boyle, Ahmad Abdul Rahim, Engelberg, Jose and Miguel Agilar and Timmy Lupus, Coach Morris Buttermaker leads the underdogs through a tough season as his Bears face off against their rivals, the Yankees.

This shirt is a winner.  Don’t believe me, then note the wisdom of Buttermaker; “This quitting thing, it’s a hard habit to break once you start.”

Gotham Silhouettes T-Shirt

This show is completely bananas, but for some reason, it remains at the top of my weekly “must watch” list.

Depicting the silhouettes of the first season’s key players, the shirt shows The Penguin, Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne, Ivy Pepper, Jim Gordon, Harvey Bullock, Fish Mooney, and Selina Kyle underneath the iconic Gotham City skyline.

The only missing silhouette are the bodies of Thomas and Martha Wayne dying in the street.

Now, that, would make an impression.

Josie and the Pussycats Power Trio T-Shirt

Created by Dan DeCarlo for Archie Comics and brought to life on Saturday mornings by Hanna Barbera, Josie and the Pussycats were by far the greatest all-girl crime-fighting singing group.

Josie, Valerie and Melody were known for their costumes as well as their iconic theme song.

Josie and the Pussycats.
Long tails and ears for hats.
Guitars and sharps and flats.
Neat, sweet and groovy song
You’re invited, come along

Wonder Woman Vintage T-Shirt

The most iconic super-heroine in the world, Wonder Woman is part of the DC Comics Trinity that includes Superman and Batman.

Yet, despite her prominence in the medium, most people (including comic fans) know the character best from her television series, which aired from 1975-1979 with Lynda Carter in the title role. This shirt definitely pays homage to the show’s influence on the character and definitely lives up to the theme show lyrics.

All the world is waiting for you
and the power you possess
In your satin tights
fighting for your rights
And the old red white and blue…

They Live One Sheet Poster T-Shirt

They Live contains one of the greatest lines in the history of cinema, delivered by Nada (portayed by the late, great Roddy Piper, “I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass…and I’m all out of bubblegum.”

Part of John Carpenter’s Apocalypse Trilogy, They Live is about drifter Nada, who discovers the ruling class are in fact aliens concealing their appearance and manipulating people to spend money, breed, and accept the status quo with subliminal messages in mass media.

With  construction worker Frank Armitage (Keith David) at his side, Nada spends his days patrolling the streets, and running out of bubblegum.

Beware the Batman From the Top T-Shirt

Holy Fashion Statement!

This take of the Dark Knight comes from his last animated series, Beware The Batman.

In this very cool shirt, a younger, more inexperienced Batman leaps from a rooftop toward the streets of Gotham City below to face such rogues as Anarky, Magpie, Ra’s al Ghul, Tobias Whale, Professor Pyg, Mister Toad, Lady Shiva, Key and Humpty Dumpty.

Unfortunately this highly stylized series only lasted a single season, but it’s unique take will be remembered by Bat-fans for years to come.

Robin – Teen Titans Go! T-Shirt

It’s hard to imagine this interpretation of The Boy Wonder fighting alongside other interpretations of The Caped Crusader.

Especially since that this Robin is from the crazy, wacky and slightly bent world of Teen Titans Go!

Inspired by the comics by Marv Wolfman and George Perez, these teen heroes fight for truth, justice and pizza.

Whether you’re a Bat-fan, a Titans fan or just a Robin-fan, this shirt depicts a young hero a few batarangs short of a utility belt.
