DEADPOOL (review)

This Valentine’s Day, give yourself and your loved one a treat and go see the best romantic, blood-spattered, foul-mouthed, riotous, action film ever made.

The Merc With a Mouth finally gets his own film and it is exactly what you would expect.

Ryan Reynolds finally is Wade Wilson, Deadpool; the role he was born to play.

When he was cast as Wade Wilson in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, what we got was an abomination of a version of “The Merc with a Mouth” or should I say “WITHOUT a mouth”.

They got his character totally wrong. Not only was the movie bad, but the Wade Wilson in that film was so far from Deadpool, fan outcry could be heard all the way to the Negative Zone.

So, Reynolds has worked since 2004 to set things right and finally in 2016, Deadpool is here.
Deadpool is the wise cracking, cynical, and deadly mercenary with a heart of gold, created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza in 1991 for Marvel Comics.

Deadpool the movie is the hilarious, 4th wall breaking, balls-to-the wall action film the fans have been waiting for. This movie is rated-R for a reason and it is awesome. Dong. Lots and lots of Dong. Boobs and violence and a plethora of cussing, of course, but also Deaddong.

Reynolds is as perfect as Deadpool as Chris Evans is to Captain America.

The action is blazingly fast and beautifully choreographed. The humor is perfectly suited for the character and at no point does he or the film take itself too seriously. Nothing is sacred in this film. Not even Reynolds himself is spared by the pot-shots taken by the writers of the movie.

In fact I think Reynolds relished making fun of the travesty of his first portrayal of Wilson and definitely his turn as the Emerald Knight, Green Lantern. Every franchise in the Marvel Universe is not immune to their wit.

As you would expect, pop-culture references abound and it features, hands down, my favorite cameo of “The Man” himself in a Marvel film.

Fans may explode from laughing. This movie is a cornucopia of easter eggs. References to references to a reference of a moment in a comic or movie are made. So pay attention. The film starts at 140 MPH and ends at about 359 MPH.

As I said Reynolds is perfection. His supporting cast are amazing as well. T.J Miller as the bar-running quick witted, Weasel gives Reynolds’ mouth a run for his money. Morena Baccarin is gorgeous and not to be trifled with as Wade/Deadpool’s love interest and equally badass, Vanessa. “Generic British Bad Guy”, Ajax is great and very British played by Londoner, Ed Skrien. Along with the the rest of the cast the film is, all-in-all, a really fun 108 min ride.

Oh the plot.

Right, I forgot:

• Wise-cracking Mercenary meets bad-ass girl. 

• They fall in love. Sex. He gets cancer (not from the sex – sex doesn’t give you cancer). 

• They break up. 

• He goes through hellacious alternative medicine to get better. 

• He gets better, but ugly. 

• He finds out he can’t die. 

• He goes on maniacal, righteous and often times hilarious, killing spree to find the asshole who did this to him (He’s a mercenary, remember?). 

• X-Men. 

• Well, two X-Men. 

• Well, One X-Men and one sort of not really X-Men. 

• Bad guy kidnaps Merc’s girlfriend. 

• Big fight. 

• Explosions. 

• Boob(sort of). 

• Punching and shooting and stabbing. 

• Kissing. 

• The End.

Oh right. And of course. Stay till after the credits. It is perfect and SO apropos for this film.

See it with someone you love.  Or someone you want to kill.  It doesn’t matter.  It’s good either way.
