The Force will be strong at the 42nd Annual Saturn Awards
with “Star Wars:
The Force Awakens
” leading the pack with 15
nominations, followed by “Crimson Peak
and “Mad Max: Fury Road” with 9
apiece, while “The Walking Dead,”
Game of Thrones,” “Hannibal,”
Daredevil” and “Supergirl” topped TV nominations
in an out of this
world Year for Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror

Stars Wars: The Force Awakens” not only saw audiences returning to “a galaxy far, far away” in record numbers, but earned a record-breaking 15 nominations, including Best Science Fiction Film, Best Actor (Harrison Ford), Best Actress (Daisy Ridley), Best Supporting Actor(s) (John Boyega & Adam Driver), Best Supporting Actress(es) (Carrie Fisher & Lupita Nyong’o) as well as Best Director (J.J. Abrams), Best Screenplay (JJ Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan & Michael Arndt), Best Music (John Williams) as the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films today announced nominations for the 42nd Annual Saturn Awards, which will be presented in June.

Other major contenders were Guillermo Del Toro’s Gothic Horror masterpiece “Crimson Peak,” which romanced 9 nominations, including Best Horror Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress (Jessica Chastain) and Best Actress (Mia Wasikowska), alongside George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” also with 9 nominations, for such top honors as Best Science Fiction Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actress (Charlize Theron).

Also making a strong showing was “Jurassic World,” which proved this blockbuster franchise was far from extinct by garnering 7 nominations, including Best Science Fiction Film, Best Screenplay (Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Colin Trevorrow, Derek Connolly), and Best Director (Colin Trevorrow). Marvel’s “Ant-Man” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” will go head-to-head in the Best Comics-to-Film category, with 6 and 4 nominations respectively, and Ridley Scott’s “The Martian” scienced 6 nominations including Best Science Fiction Film, Best Screenplay (Drew Goddard), Best Supporting Actress (Jessica Chastain, *her second nomination of the year), Best Actor (Matt Damon) and Best Director (Ridley Scott).

In TV categories, AMC’s stalwart show The Walking Dead walked off with 7 nominations (while its sister show Fear the Walking Dead scared up 3), followed closely by Game of Thrones (HBO) with 5, and a four-way-tie between Daredevil (Netflix), Hannibal (NBC), Supergirl (CBS), and Wayward Pines (Fox), each with 4. Nostalgia made us believers again as The X-Files (Fox) and Ash vs. Evil Dead (Starz) received 3 and 2 noms respectively, including Best TV Actors David Duchovny (The X-Files) and Bruce Campbell (Ash vs. Evil Dead), and Gillian Anderson who was nominated for her roles in both The X-Files and Hannibal.

This year the Saturn Awards has added Best New Media Television – which saw Netflix receive an amazing 9 nominations (lead by Marvel’s Daredevil and Jessica Jones) with Amazon achieving two with for The Man in the High Castle, and Bosch.

The Academy was founded in 1972 by noted film historian Dr. Donald A. Reed to honor and recognize films often overlooked by mainstream awards. Over the years, the Academy has expanded its reach to include recognizing excellence in television and home entertainment, as well as other genres, including adventure, thriller and action. Robert Holguin, president of the Academy stated “The genre entertainment arena has caused a sensation in terms of success and quality. The world is seeing the power and influence which has been achieved in these most imaginative and creative fields of entertainment”.
