I loved the first issue of this series. And Brian Michael Bendis brings it again in this issue. This is shaping up to be a really great miniseries that isn’t changing the continuity all. It just seems to be enhancing what is already there.
The first few pages take place in the past after Krypton blows up.
Rogol Zaar seems to be responsible and the first few pages are downright haunting.
Then, we pop by The Daily Planet which leads into some good old fashioned Superman excitement!
Superman is dealing with the nuisance of the Toyman, who decides to show up in Coast City controlling a giant robot.
Then, Green Lantern shows up as Superman is wrapping up. Hal seems concerned about Clark’s recent isolation from League business and unexplained absences and questions if something is going on that Clark doesn’t want to discuss.
Bendis handles Green Lantern as well as he does Superman and it’s a treat. Maybe he can write a regular Green Lantern title in the future?
We then get a flashback of what happened to Jon and Lois. It’s a nice teaser drawn by Jason Fabok. In it we see a strange being confronting the family. But it still doesn’t answer any questions because that’s all we see as it’s only two pages. And that’s a good thing! Bendis builds a natural mystery and keeps us guessing.
Then, Steve Rude takes over the second half of the issue on art duties! There is a hunter of some sort who is heading to earth! He’s after Superman! And there seems to be more cases of arson going on. Is someone trying to burn the city down one building at a time?
Bendis keeps all of these balls in the air and keeps things compelling. The reader is never lost, no matter how complicated it may seem. He’s making some good comics right here. I’m glad it’s weekly. I don’t know if I could stand the wait otherwise.
